was using a Lite-on writer for about year, started getting different shaded burn areas on dvd-r (cd-r are still solid shade). Replaced it with an Asus and that did it on the 2nd dvdr, so I googled, read several posts on myce that rings indicate speed changes and part of a "burning strategy" of the hardware. I'm not sure why the Lite-on would suddenly start doing this. I usually dont see dvd-r with burn rings from other people or retail sources, so I always thought of this as a bad sign.
I also have a Samsung blu reader/dvd writer installed which I dont use much since its more expensive, but have started to use it more because of the rings; it makes solid burns on dvd-r, so I dont think the discs are the problem.
Can I (or should I) attempt to set burn speed in CAV mode to prevent the rings? Is this only possible with enabled hardware, like some Pioneer writers?

Staring at rings on burned discs is bad enough.....but if you are replacing burners BECAUSE of the rings.....you need psychiatric help.

It's a zonal ring, if the disc was a good one.
If it's a low quality disc, then it's simply a bad discs.

Was the ring symmetrical, or not? That's the difference between zonal vs damage.

Burning strategy is part of the firmware, and firmware is software.

It's really so how lordsmurf wrote.

    Steely Dan - Katy Lied album(vinyl) - 1975 - Liner Notes
"Transfer from master tapes to master lacquers is done on a Neumann VMS 70 computerized lathe equipped with a variable pitch, variable depth helium cooled cutting head. The computerized logic circuits of the VMS 70 widen and narrow the grooves on the disc in accordance with its own bizarre electronic mentation for reasons known only to its designers; this accounts for the lovely light and dark patterns that can be seen on the surface of the pressing."

Variations like this have been going on for decades.

a ring by definition is symmetric. But that response didnt answer my questions, as my other burner makes solid burns with same discs.

no idea what your talking about regarding RW (rewritable) dvds.
Something about the non-software forums that brings out the trolls and other a-holes - maybe because they can righteously speculate without an actual expert (like jagabo) calling their bluff.

That is the right jerk asking for help and then insulting others when you recognize the bullshit you wrote...

    Get a brain or dead.

Ask yourself what SAME DISCS mean!!

You know, who gives a shit if it changes disc speeds in burning, so long as what it burns turns out OK? Right?!!

    Are you using quality media?
    (Yes->)Then stop worrying about it.
(No->)You know what our suggestion would be.
