  1. Does anyone know if it is possible to add a non-VCD related file to the VCD? TSCV has the FileSystem tab that has a button to add files.
What I want to do is put a freeware player on the VCD so that someone can view the files on their PC CD-player install the VCD Player and then play the VCD with the installer player.
Has anyone else done this? Is it possible?

    Thanks for the great site!!!!!!

  2. Since it'd only risk ruining one disk at the most, give it a try. Use a CD-RW for no risk at all.

  3. Adding a player to a vcd should work without a problem. WinOnCD adds its own player by default, and I do it all the time in VCDEasy. If you add an autorun.inf to the root directory you can even have the player start up automatically.

  4. Vcd_play from ROXIO don't works on windows 2000 or NT, only in win98

  5. That's not true. I am using Windows 2000, and vcd_play does work flawlessly on my machine. I don't know about XP, though.

  6. I was able to add it using VCDEasy and I can install the player from the disc (just tried it). Only issue I found was that it crops the name down to 8 characters. Some self-extracting applications don't work if their name is incorrect. Thanks all.

  7. what's your version?

  8. It's the one from WinOnCD 3.8 PE. If I check the properties of VCD_PLAY.EXE it says that it's version 1.1.1.0 . Perhaps it has to do with which mpg1-codec is installed on your machine. I could imagine that VCD_PLAY doesn't come with its own codec but simply uses DirectX for Playback.

  9. A google.com search for vcd_play turned up the file in 2 places. I have not found any documentation for it though - anyone?

  10. Yes Freshman! You are right! I had download the new upgrade for winoncd 5 (sp 5.02) and now SVCD works too. It's great

  11. kfoss: if your intention is to autorun your vcd why don't you think to launch media-player to play your vcd ?
if your vcd is standard i've seen no problem from wmp 6.4 up to 7

  12. I guess thatI must have missed something with WMP. I have WMP on everything from Win95, Win98, WinXP and none of them will play the VCD directly. All of them can play the individual .DAT files. I would like to have the ability for to distribute the VCD and the end recipient can play it on their CD- or DVD-drive without downloading a player from the internet. They will still need to install the freeware player that I would put on the VCD but at no cost of $$$ or time.
Now if there is a way to autorun the VCD in WMP so that it will play the menus or at least the whole VCD (track after track), I would like to know as that would be an excellent feature to add.

  13. I think that you're right as far as WMP is concerned: It's not capable of proper VCD-playback with menus, etc.

The great thing about the Roxio program is it doesn't even need installing on the PC as it it's only one file that is loaded into memory when you run it. Unfortunately it's not freeware, though, in the sense that you can probably only legally distribute with VCDs that you've made with WinOnCD - technically it works just as well if you add it to a VCD that you do with VCDEasy or similar software.

  14. you are absolutely alright: no menu no chapters in wmp , but fortunately it is already pre-installed on every pc !
i found the workaround to make wmp play vcd on this site :
must be created an autorun.ini in the root of your cd of course containing exactly this syntax :
    open =start mplayer2.exe /play /close \mpegav\avseq01.dat

i read on this site that structure of .dat is a little different from .mpg but this for me works .

it plays well in all win9x and win2000 i tryed -
i'am speaking of italian localized windows os

strange things appens if vcd is not absolutely standard and the only codec on board are windows standard: wmp seems to hang and continuosly speed cd-drive trying to load i dont know what.

another thing to avoid in my experience is poor cd brand or too much quick burning speed : for me 4x is max to escape from problem not only for standalone dvd player but also for pc.

i realized that speed in burning create errors , errors are automatically corrected by the burning software but video files need streaming continuos and too much error in writing makes different comportments on different pc-hardware : there are so many facts engaged in decoding that makes exausting try to give an answer to any different problem on different machines.

    my recipes is: slow burning , good cd-brand , cd-r .
Using cd-rw is good for testing but if you have to distribute your work i had so many problems with cd-drive (also scsi drive) that are only 3/4 years old : they hangs about reflection of cd-rw uncapable to play them correctly (i'am talking about vcd autorunning : same cd-rw containing data is correctly read by explorer !!! sigh.... )

This is all i know waiting menu and chapters support from our friend Bill- sometimes-invalicable-Gates.

I am trying to do something very similar, except that I want to add data files (e.g. pdf) that can be read on a PC.

I know that it can be done.

If I find a solution, I will let you know.

In the meanhwile, I would be grateful if anybody has come up with a solution they can share.

    Thanks

  16. Rajeshkanwar,
In VCDEasy, under the ISO tab, it is pretty straightforward to add any file, such as .PDF, .INI, .EXE to the disk, provided that there is still enough space with your video. From what I can tell, these files are burned after the VCD tracks but the standard ISO table of Contents holds the fact that the file(s) are present on the CD. If the extra files put you over the limit for the CD-R(W), then you'll probably lose your added files before your VCD tracks.
TSCV is about as easy however I seem to get poorer results (ie. scrambling) when I make an image with TSCV. I prefer VCDEasy even if I can't save.
If I 'm wrong on any of this, please someone let me know.

    Thanks

I will give VCDEasy a try tomorrow and let you know.
