  1. I just did my first DVD rip of Cats and Dogs. From .vob to Divx high quality, which is why its so massive (2.47Gb). Although the size is not an issue, when i go to play the movie it takes window media player, and some other players years to load up the file! 8 minutes+!

Is there anyway i can get round this, except making the file smaller?
I downloaded one player, called Sami Player which didnt have the same problem and loaded the movie instantly. Is ther a fix for mdeia player?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Is it loading from a hard disk or a DVD-R/RW/etc disk?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  4. To Bloody 'ell With WMP...

If Sasami2K works, just use that! When I burn my DivX discs I make sure I leave space to put the DivX Codec, The Playa and Sasami2K (along with a few other downloadable tools) on the data disc as well. That way, if I take my work to show off on a friend's computer, I can install the software on the spot to make sure everything will play properly. I also include a small text file with instructions on how each file should be used, in case someone needs it when I'm not around.

If there are some features of Windows Media Player you prefer over other players, then maybe you should either a) upgrade to the latest version of WMP or b) downgrade to a previous version. The problem may simply be some weird configuration glitch with DivX 5.0 though. I'm letting others deal with it, as I'm still using DivX 4.12 for now and I'm quite happy with the results.

Do you have a slow hard drive? Limited available space? A small system swap file? A CPU under 1 GHz? Significantly less than 128 MB system RAM? Any of those factors could potentially effect your playback experience.

Honestly, none of my DivX files are over a Gigabyte so far, and I haven't experienced the glitches you speak of... This could be apples & oranges though, since I'm not ripping from DVD (yet), just recording TV shows for playback and archiving.

You mentioned in your other thread about what happens when you skip, or move the slider, to another portion of your video. What you describe is slightly annoying, but seems to be normal for Sasami2K. Depending on the size of the file you are playing and how far you skip forward or backward, the program has to sort of "catch up" to the audio for a few seconds. This has more to do with the way AVI files are structured than with the player itself. Different programs use different means to deal with A/V sync and though this means is slightly distracting at first, you get used to it after a while.

I'm sure this minor annoyance with a 500 MB file might become a headache with a 2.5 GB file. You could simply create a separate DivX file for each VOB chapter on your DVD. That way you could just select the file that has the scene you want to view in it. Or you could re-encode a much smaller, slightly lower quality DivX file for casual viewing of the entire movie at once.

Static is in the minds and hearts of all mankind the sad part is... that we never fully comprehend the concept that is static.
