Lower MB recording

on a pioneer dvr-530h i recorded and hour show and it said something like the file is to big it will reduce size and the recording was about 500 mb, next time i recorded an hour show i didnt get the message and the recording was about 4.3 gb. How do i use the 500 mb mode as that is what i want for putting recordings to usb drive?

or do i just try to put more recordings on the disk or use a program to do this the long way?

i figured this out there were playmodes like sp lp ep etc which represent lesser resolution modes i guess is this the best way or convert or with a pc program?
