An error occured during the encoding process
53 from dvdflcik: File not found
I can compile hundreds of discs with the software (version 1.3.0.9), provided I do not attempt to create one with menus.
But now I want to make a few discs with menus. Furthermore, I don't want to use the program's generic selection—I want something that matches my content. Below is an accounting of my struggle with DVD Flick and the work-around I've devised.
Following directions found online, I had substituted the graphics in "The Party" with custom graphics matching my DVD content. Everything was the same for every image I replaced: DPI and size in pixels. I was very careful about that. I was using version 1.3.0.7 at this time.
I was able to create one disc with my modified "Party" successfully. Every attempt afterward has returned error number 53, with some note about not being able to find a particular file. This happens when the software reaches the point at which it attempts to create the menus.
I uninstalled 1.3.0.7 and installed 1.3.0.9. Apparently, 1.3.0.9 allows for new templates to be added into mix, whereas the previous 1.3.0.7 would ignore any and all additions. Put a new template into the template folder, and it will appear in Menu settings. My new template (with a new name), created off the back of "The Party," worked fine the first time, but returned error 53, afterward.
I stubbornly pressed on, modifying "Mosiac" by substituting the three main graphics with new ones I had earlier used to modify "The Party." I have managed to create one new volume successfully. The second attempt returned error 53.
I uninstalled and reinstalled 1.3.0.9. I modified "Mosiac" as before, and it worked. But the software returned error 53 the second time I attempted to use the same menu template.
Clearly, some setting becomes corrupted when authoring discs with menus.
Reinstalling the software allows the user to author a single disc with menu. Not the most practical solution.
I've read that deleting the files contained within C:\Users\your user name here\AppData\Roaming\DVD Flick and restarting is a work-around. It certainly tricks the software into thinking it's running the first time (evidenced by the appearance of the initial run menu), but does not prevent error 53.
I've read that launching the program as Administrator prevents error 53. It does not, not with the current version of the software, that is.
So I continued playing with the bug. That meant another reinstall.
I successfully created a volume with a menu using the "Mosiac" template modified with custom graphics. The next time I attempt to use the "Mosiac" template, I get error 53. So I modify a different template, "The Party," with the same custom graphics, and successfully created a volume with a menu. Naturally, I got error 53 the next time I attempted using "The Party" template.
Be aware that it doesn't matter if the template graphics are modified or not—this error occurs either way, every time. This tells me that templates can be used just once before choking the software.
I began using only copies of templates I keep in a backup folder. I took a template I've used once before, copied it, renamed the copy to something completely irrelevant (and obscene), and put that into DVD Flick's templates folder. One nice feature in 1.3.0.9 is the ability to add completely new templates to the software, rather than relying on modified versions of the original six.
Provided I use a new name each time, I can throw any number of copies of a given template into the templates folder, and it will work just fine. I've realized that it's not the content of a template that is causing these crashes; no, it's the name of the template. Any name can only be used once per installation of the software. Now, that's a funny bug.
For any user who has experienced the bug, I recommend uninstalling the program and deleting the DVD Flick folder (which may require a reboot, first). No need to worry about Registry entries, as these are simply overwritten when the software is reinstalled. Once the software is reinstalled, copy the templates folder to a safe location. Never, ever use the original six templates that come with the software. Instead, copy one, rename the copy, and toss that into the templates folder. Each copy will work only once, but that's fine, because you just make a new copy from the same original but with a different name.
I've tested simply renaming a used template (instead of deleting and replacing); this also results in error 53, unfortunately.
For what it's worth, I'm on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine.

Sometimes, uninstalling and reinstalling is the only way to successfully create a disc with menus. I just finished a set of 8 discs, each with menus, and must have uninstalled the program three or four times along the way.
I do wish someone more talented than myself would kill this bug.
If you've never made a disc with menus, you've never experienced the full wrath of this particular bug, and should count yourself amongst the most blessed.
Yep.

I made one last night with menus. Did not get the encoding error 53 of which you spoke but I was just using the default menu graphics. It worked for the first disc but I have not tried to burn another with menus. Will give that a go.
Do you know if this is a problem only when you try to replace the default graphics in the menu folders with custom ones or is it also a problem when only default files are used?
