  1. My question is which audio setting should a movie be on, and/or what are the differences beetween each??? I like to play the vcd's with a dvd player with suround sound on but what is the best for surround sound/overall????

  2. Hi,

The Original VCD standard allows both Stereo and Joint Stereo. The difference between them, is that Stereo uses 2 Full audio channel to produce audio. So if you have a soundstrack with exactly the same left and right channel, both channels are still encoded seperatly. Joint Stereo is saves only the difference between the 2 tracks. This means that if you have exactly the same left and right channel, you'll use about half of the bitrate that a Stereo stream would use. The down side of Joint Stereo is that it's not really good for surround. So if you wanna use Surround, just go for Stereo. It's much better.

  3. So just to elaborate on that further, does this therefore mean that the overall filesize of a joint stereo mp2 stream containing repetetive left and right channel sounds, would therefore result in a smaller file size than a stereo stream; and if that is the case then doesn't that negate the useage of a predefined bitrate i.e 128KBP/s to give you a guaranteed filesize???
    Does that make sense ???
    I await an unconfused answer

  4. Hi again...

Well, to tell you the truth... I really don't know (for sure). My experience with encoding VCD's using both, is that the file size doesn't really change (much). I've encoded using both, but never acctually bother to see what the difference between two larger clips is. I guess you're right about the smaller file size of the file which uses joint-stereo, coz if the file size would be the same, the extra bit/left over bits either get filled with nothingness, or the bitrate can go up to use higher quality. BUT... this last thing would make it a VBR audio stream, which isn't exactly VCD standard...

Al i know for sure is that Stereo give me a good surround sound, which is the most importend issue for me. If the Joint-Stereo file is a couple of megs smaller over a whole movie, well i don't mind that.

What i do know for sure, is how they work. I don't know what happens to the bitrate, but this is what happens to the sound :

Stereo : Has 2 seperate sound channels which both contain their own stream. The both of them create.... stereo sound (or Surround).

Joint Stereo: Is a single stream when both left and right are the same (saving 50% bitrate at thos points) but becomes dual/stereo the moment there is a difference between left and right.
