  1. just wondering how much quality is really lost when i go one bigger rom size to lower, say vob set to mkv and back. dunno if i actually end up doing that a lot. but these video collectively take up way a lot of my hd size so i thinking converting some video to dvd vob format and delete source files from my hd to make room for newer stuff and so on. please advice.

You want to re encode from "vob set to mkv and back"? To dvd compliant video? You'll lose tons of quality that way.

If you're talking about re encoding vob (dvd rips, I assume) to something smaller in bit rate/size, you will lose quality as well. But not as much as encoding back to dvd.

How much quality is lost has been asked here a lot of times, and it's not really possible to answer. Quality is subjective. Though it depends on what you want to watch the videos on.
