  1. Hello,

I have an .avi file that I tried to open in every common players but with no success. In VLC the error message is 'VLC does not support the audio or video format "MIL" '. I found out that MIL stands for Matrox Imaging Library format.
I install the matrox VFW Software Codecs (http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/version2.0/) but even so the file was no readable. Also, I already tried to convert the file to another format using different video converters.
I don't no what to do anymore....

    Please help!

  2. VLC uses its own built in decoders. It has no ability to use system installed codecs. So no matter what you install, VLC is not going to play your video.

If you installed a VFW decoder for the codec, VirtualDub should be able to open it and convert it to some other codec.

I already tried with virtualdub too. It appears a similar error :
''Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MIL' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. "

  4. If you installed a 32 bit codec you'll need to use 32 bit VirtualDub to open the video. If you installed a 64 bit codec you'll need to use 64 bit VirtualDub. If neither works either the codec didn't install correctly or it wasn't the right codec or wasn't a VFW codec.

According to a few Google search results, the "MIL " FourCC stands for *uncompressed 16-bit grayscale*

Assuming that's true, then you may have some luck with MPlayer, or ffplay, or ffmpeg,
by forcing the input pixel format

The VfW codec in ffdshow supports a large number of FourCCs. But I won't guarantee that MIL is among them.

I don't think that there are many "64 bit VfW codecs", so using a 64 bit VirtualDub would not be recommendable in general (in fact, I would not even expect one; AviSynth+ 64 bit may be the only "VfW-alike" image source I know which a 64 bit VirtualDub would use). The whole VfW API is a relic of Windows 3.x.

"Matrox Imaging Library" .. if MIL use code reader tool to open and play it ... converting it by using screen recording application

  8. check file with ffplay - part of ffmpeg - if ffplay will show video then should be not problem to convert this to some more common format
