I have a Samsung flat screen tv, wdtv, jvc vcr/dvd combo and a western digital hd. How can I capture off the tv and save it to the hard disk? Do I have to record to the VCR then save it to the hd? John

You wrote in a previous post that you have DirecTV. As I recall some DirecTV satellite DVRs allow attaching an external eSATA hard drive for expanding the storage space available for recording TV. Is that what you want to do, or do you have something else in mind?

P.S. Using big, bold fonts in forum posts are like shouting at the other members. Use regular-size fonts if you don't want to annoy the people reading your posts.

[Edit]One thing is certain, you cannot attach a hard drive to a TV made for N. America and record TV on the hard drive, or attach a hard drive to your JVC DVD player/VCR combo and record TV on the hard drive, or attach a hard drive to a WDTV media player and record TV on the hard drive.

After going through all the new posts, I was going to ask basically the same Q. What I actually want is some screenshots of my argosy player (which does not do that-my dune does) the on-screen user interface specifically. Some media player manufacturer is interested.

(Short of taking a pic of the tv screen with a camera!

Yes, no, maybe, I don't know, Can you repeat the question?

It is not not quite the same question, and you should have started a new thread rather than post in somebody else's. I'll answer it anyway.

You need to connect a HDMI HD capture device (cost $90 - $180) to the media player, then use its capture software to capture the Argosy player's HDMI output. If the capture software doesn't make screenshots, VLC can when playing back the capture file. If the HDMI output from the Argosy player is HDCP protected, you will also need an HDMI splitter that removes HDCP as a side effect.

@RBCC A similar set up will work for recording the output from a satellite receiver or media player, although only some HDMI capture devices will work for making timed recordings like a VCR. Speaking from personal experience, it takes a fair amount of time and technical expertise to learn how to use an HDMI capture device and timer-based software for recording from a cable box or satellite receiver. That being the case, this does not strike me as the kind of solution that you are looking for

In my opinion, the best device for your needs in terms of balancing price and performance is an EZCap 280. It is $75 and found here: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/EZCAP-280-HD-Video-capture-1080P-Game-Capture-...977751991.html . Sometimes they go on sale for less, I got mine for $67.07 free shipping. I will post sample clips when mine comes in the mail, but I only get over the air TV, which I use an analog pass-through box with.

The device will encode the video automatically for you with the h264 codec at 18mbps after you set it up with the software, which will save space for you. It comes with component and hdmi inputs and will be easy for you to use. You can see sample videos on youtube. If the material is has digital copyprotection, it is recommended to use the component cables. This means that the cable company does not want you to have a digital to digital copy of the material. Component connections are analog connections and therefore are ok to use; they give very decent quality. Some people hook up certain hdmi splitters in between the capture box and the cable/satellite box, which will remove the HDCP copy protection, but I do not recommend that. It seems like the cable companies do not want you to do that.

If you don't like/trust East Asian Tech companies you can get very similar devices from Hauppage, Avermedia and El Gato. I personally do not think they are worth their overinflated prices, but most people do. The El Gato is the most popular.

    El Gato:

    Avermedia:
    http://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Portable-Capture-Xbox360-60Mbps/dp/B00B2IZ3B0/ref=sr_1...=avermedia+lgp
    Hauppage:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GEBVEI6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411863253&sr=8-1&keywords=...auppage+rocket

Startech also makes a device in the same category as the first four options, but I have not read of many people buying it:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00DVS8TL0

And Roxio makes the following device. I don't know what it exactly does:
    http://www.amazon.com/Roxio-Game-Capture-HD-PRO/dp/B008YTAGGW

If you need lossless video (very large file size), have fast computer with a usb 3.0 NEC/Renesas chipset, and have the computer knowledge to do software encoding, you might want to go with the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle:

@RBCC, You should be aware that excapper is a shill who is now using this forum to promote all kinds of junk sold under the ezcap name. Do yourself a favor and buy a product from a real company that offers a warranty, customer support, licensed software that actually works, and doesn't require you to have their product shipped direct from China.
