Fast forwarding converted avi files

Hi all, first post so hope to get some help.
I have been using convertxtodvd to convert downloaded movies and burn them to disc so they play on my dvd/tv but lately to save money, been using flash drives.
I convert the original file/s from Divx, MP4, MKV or whatever to AVI using Freemake Video Converter or Free AVI Video Converter, then copy them to a flash drive.
Problem!! Is there any way to fast forward or skip through the movie on the flash drive? It's a buggar having to sit through the whole lot to get to the place where you fell asleep!!!

Have you found a video where you can fast forward on your dvd or tv?

Please give more information about the player. DVD or/and TV.
