  1. After leaving a file to encode for a quite a long time, I noticed the HD where I set the destination was showing 0MB free space

I paused the encoding, cleared some room, then tried resuming the operation. Nothing appeared to be happening (or failed), so I stopped VidCoder and tried rebooting. When opening VidCoder again, I deleted the file I had queued up, BUT none of my HD space seems to be recovered...

    Anyone help?

Oh, I did remove the failed result file from the destination folder.

  2. Did you empty the Recycle Bin? Until you do that the file is still on the hard drive using space.

  3. Theres nothing in VidCoder related in the recycle bin.

    I deleted anyway... no difference.

Bit surprised though... I read somewhere VidCoder writes to the Temp folder - my OS is installed on C: .
The destination folder was set to E: ?

  4. So find VidCoder's temp folder and delete the old temp files*. Or encoding a new job may delete file temp files automatically.

    * I've never used VidCoder but where the temp files are may vary depending on the OS. Try looking in C;\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\VidCoder\. They might also be in Local or LocalLow rather than Roaming.

  5. Not much in those folders.

Like I said, I have VidCoder installed on the primary OS drive C:, I'm using E: for the destination.

Anyone know where the encoding temp files should be allocated? C or E?

At least then I'll be aware of where to leave the most space for it...

  6. Open a command prompt. Type "set temp" and hit enter. Look in the folder that gives you. And subfolders from there.

  7. Thanks jagabo.

You are very insistent that VidCoder will use the operating systems temp directory, while I currently assume the same, I would just like a confirmation from someone who has used VidCoder in the past...

    Really appreciate the help, thanks.

Because most programs do. You didn't explicitly say where you've looked so I'm just offering likely locations.

Have you checked the folder that Vidcoder is installed in? Maybe a TEMP folder down from there? Maybe C:\TEMP? C:\VidCoder? Maybe E:\TEMP? Maybe VidCoders's setup dialogs let you specify the temp folder.

Doesn't Vidcoder run on Java ? The temp files may be in a Java temp folder.

Be sure to enable the display of hidden files and folders in Explorer.

  9. Yeah, seemed like I've checked everywhere...

I just started a new encode - 10% in and it still isn't very obvious...

  10. You should be able to see free space decreasing on the drive with the temp files. That will tell you what drive they're on.

  11. I actually gained 500MB on my C: drive

Ok, everything appears normal now... C: is slowly decreasing in freespace

Thanks for all your help jagabo - very much appreciated!

  12. Found out what this was...

As I'm using a frontend to Handbrake, turns out HandBrake doesn't remove the temporary files it uses from the Temp folder. It creates and leaves folder structures "HB.xxxx" folders...

Win7 sucks ass not showing folder sizes in explorer!
