I am using an ATI All-In-Wonder card to capture video from my DVD player and VCR. I capture the video in AVI format, which works fine when it's a tape (not recorded from the DVD player) or TV. When capturing from the DVD player, or even a tape that has been recorded from the DVD player, the video looks fine during the capture. After saving the AVI, the playback only allows me to see the first frame captured with a small amount of screen (about 9/10ths) on the top showing moving video - like the first frame is sort-of like an upside-down curtain. I checked the AVI file's properties and it said that it is not copyrighted, but I have a feeling that some of the coding from the DVD might have transfered over. Has anyone ran into this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions?

several things come to mind when you bring this up... i have been told (but never seen myself) that some dvds are "copy" protected meaning you can copy them... but sence you copy them to vhs i don't think thats it... what softwere are you using to capture it? (i use an ati tv wonder with virtual dub)
Static is in the minds and hearts of all mankind the sad part is... that we never fully comprehend the concept that is static. -
Actually, I found a work-around to the problem. Since I also have an internal DVD player in my computer, I rip the DVD to my HD using a DVD decoder, then play it back to my VCR and record it on tape. Then, from the tape I can record the video back to my computer using the same software (which is the packaged software that comes with the ATI All-In-Wonder), and there are no problems. Thank you for responding to my inquery, I guess that I should explore as many possibilities before I post something.

The decoder (i.e. Smartripper, DVDx, etc) removes the encryption/copy protection, permanently (just not from the original DVD).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Well, what I actually did was use a DVD decoding program (I think it was Smartripper, but I'm not at my home computer to verfy that) to decode and extract the DVD to my hard drive. From there, I could cut out segments of the DVD from the .VOB files and change them to .mpg with TMPGEnc, but I wanted them in .avi format so I could add subtitles, then make them into .mpg. So, I used the video player from my ATI A-i-W's bundled software to play the .vob's at full screen and recorded them to my VCR under SP format. I then captured the video from the VHS tape back to my computer as .avi. Given that the DVD that I ripped was in English and Japanese versions, the .vob's had scenes from both languages. I only wanted the Japanese language scenes, so now I can search on my VCR to the Japanese scenes and capture those, rather than searching and cliping on my computer.
