I've never messed with audio conversion before, but now I must.

Title says all: I want a program that can convert .wav into .mp3 (but please, no iTunes).

Preferably, I want one that can convert multiple .wavs at once. For example: You open 10 .wavs in the program, select "convert all files" or something like that and then the program starts converting each of them automatically, one after another.

  3. Audacity, BeSweet, EAC.
    They need Lame to work.
EAC (and Foobar too, if I remember well) can work on multiple files.

For quality + options + batch + multiple format choices, my money is on LameXP.

Quality does not really play into the equation with that as it is just a frontend.
Multiple formats is good but he asked about MP3, not Ogg Vorbis or Nero AAC.

RazorLame is also just a frontend. Who cares!?

LameXP, as well as Razorlame and many of those others suggested, is still a good choice. Yes, I understand as well as anyone that he ASKED about encoding to mp3, but it never hurts to have additional options.
