I finally started a project that I have been planning for years. I am trying to transfer Hi-8 tapes and mini-DV tapes to DVD. For the Hi-8 tapes, I play them in a Sony GV-D800 digital player, so I am able to connect this player to a DVD (with HDD) recorder using the DV in port (Firewire.)
Every consumer DVD recorder that I own will stop recording if there is a blank space in between scenes or if you search-fast forward through the tape. Then when the next scene starts, these DVD recorders will start recording again, but they will miss the first few seconds of the next scene. I have many tapes with scenes that last a second or two, so these short scenes don't get recorded.
I believe this problem also happens if I just use the S-video cables in any of the DVD or HDD recorders that I have. I have also contacted the manufacturers of higher end equipment and they also tell me that their equipment (such as the JVC SR-HD1700US or JVC SR-HD1350US) will stop recording when there is no video signal and then will start recording again when a signal has been detected.
Does any equipment or software record everything including the blank spaces (snow) in between scenes? Or alternatively, is there equipment or software that can record a one second scene that is preceded by a blank (“snow” on screen) space?
Thanks.
