Hi friends
I have a old VCD disk that has a .dat file that i can file copy without any error. But when i try to convert it to .mpg, only sound appears. The VCD plays ok with video & sound on a DVD player without any bad sectors.
I have tried many apps to convert but no avail eg VCUT (very old), anyVideoConverter and avidemux. When anyVidConverter looks at the .dat, it shows only the sound info with nothing in the video section.
How can i fix this. Appreciate help as i have no problem with all .dat which is an mpg without a header i presume.![]()

Have you tried simply renaming the DAT extension to MPG ? http://www.deeplysimple.net/2010/07/convert-vcd-to-mpg.html

Not yet kitty. Will try but i think chances is low. I certainly hope you are RIGHT.

Dat to Mpg must be done with the original disc data, not a file already copied to HDD, in order to strip correctly. I have used VCDGear successfully before, but it doesn't always work. Try VCDEasy (if you can still get the app to run), or ISOBuster. I probably would recommend it most, as it is designed to work on recovering data from troublesome disc sectors.

Hey Scott very interesting idea. I have used ISOBuster before but how to use it for this mission, no idea lah!! Put another way what do you want isobuster to do here.
It did not work with VCDGear direct on the VCD in the DVD player.Last edited by FuzMic; 22nd Jul 2014 at 00:47.

From IsoBuster's help file:
Extract but filter only M2F2 Mpg frames
This extraction method should only be used if you suspect certain tracks or folders contain Mpg Video Data in Mode 2 Form 2 sectors,
and if it is the Video Data you're after.
This kind of Video Data can be found on VCD, SVCD and CD-i.
In fact, this option is what other smaller and dedicated apps call 'dat2mpg'.
You can extract a *.dat file from a Video CD like this and end up with the pure mpg video data, without the overhead Windows extracts (if it even works under Windows). This 'clean' Video you need when you want to use the mpg data as input for your own Video CDs.
If you use this method in an Image File, the image file will need to be recorded Raw. If not recorded Raw, this option will be grayed out.
DVDs only have one type of blocks and they contain only user data (there's no such thing as special mode blocks for Video Data). So in case of DVD, this option will be grayed out. -
Thanks. Rename to mpg don't work. Only way is to use isobustor

If you can play VCD in Vlc player
you can record in Vlc to video file

Scott, Isobuster did it by exporting 2nd track as video only. This shows track not too good. THANKS.
A word of thanks to El Heg too for the help pointer.
Turuk - can't read VCD correctly from VLC so only ISO work this time.
