Software recommendations?

Hi there, I need an editing program for simple cut and trim/transitions but with also a sound editing app (to trim and paste music clips). I was using Windows Movie Maker but find it limited. My end product will be video, music and voice-over narration so if you have advice about software that will compress/render these layers nicely, I'd really appreciate it.
