    I have seen some samples of wmv videos and I am amazed at its compression with decent quality.

    Is there a program that can convert avi to wmv? I cant seem to find any right now.

    yes you can use windows media tools or windows media encoder

    Windows Media Encoder can convert any avi to wmv, download it from microsof site or if you want to try an older version of it for asf files, its link can be easily found somewhere on this site.
