  1. I have Nero Burning ROM 5.5.7.2 and an AVI file I want to burn to VCD. The help file says it will burn it without me having to use TMPGEnc first. When I try to burn it to disc my DVD player (Pioneer DV-333 which should play SVCD) recognizes only a CD. My question is if nero really does this correctly or should I install & run TMPGEnc first anyway. I had TMP on my old PC & it was painfully slow. Also, I notice the "burn" icon in nero is not active so I feel like it is not formatting it like it says it does.

  2. Why do you want to burn an avi to VCD?
Dvd players will not play .avi. They only play mpeg 1 & 2.
You have to convert the avi to mpeg first, then burn the mpeg to VCD.
You will have to install Tmpgenc or something similar to convert it.
And yes it is very, very, slow, but unfortunately that is all there is.

Does anyone know or heard of a new version of tmpge that might be a bit faster? Real time sounds so nice.....

  3. Thanks for the reply. However the help file to Nero says:
"Burning [S]VCD from AVI files is now possible. To do this, simply drag and drop the AVI files from the File Browser to the video compilation window or use the "Add" command from the "Edit" menu.

"The AVI files will be encoded to MPEG format when the burn process starts. This takes quite a long time and needs temporary disk space."

It is not working, so I thought maybe there was a step I was overlooking. I guess I will go ahead with TMP.

  4. I also have Nero 5.... When you do the drag and drop Nero encodes the file to mpg before it burns it.
"The AVI files will be encoded to MPEG format when the burn process starts. This takes quite a long time and needs temporary disk space."[ So I would suggest you convert it before you use Nero. Nero takes longer to encode then temp.
However it does sound like something is wrong with Nero or as you said you are missing a step. Since you said you have read and followed the steps the only other thing that it could be is either Nero is not working right or you don't really have an .avi file. Me I would try and encode with temp. first, and then try to reburn it in Nero.
