  2. One obvious problem: video is close to standard PAL resolution while its frame rate is set to NTSC.

Try running the MKV thru mkvmerge first and then try the conversion

Demux the mkv into video and audio files. Then check the audio in an audio editor. If everything is ok remuxor or maybe AVStoDVD will allow you to load the two files.... It's been awhile since I've bothered making a DVD..

^There are a few obstacles for importing separate streams from an mkv into AVStoDVD.

AVStoDVD will let you import separate streams if you import the video first, then right click on the main menu to add the audio. But it doesn't recognize .h264 files natively, and you have to look for All Files when searching for the video stream. And it will often complain that it cannot establish the duration of the h264 video stream from an mkv, so you have to put this in by hand for both the video stream and the audio stream.

all that has done is opened a command prompt box for a second then nothing, apologies if this is a silly question but could I not convert the AC3 sound track to a MP3 or some other form then remux it back into one file, then try to process it with AVStoDVD

It should have created 2 files, one for stereo AC3 another for 5.1. Did you feed it an ac3 elementary stream with an .ac3 extension? There might be 2 speaker configurations in there, which would confuse a lot of programs.

Oh, it seems to be able to demux MKV as well. If both the files it creates turn out to be more than 0 bytes then you have your answer. Otherwise we'll have to keep looking...

Open up a command prompt and type the command manually, at least then it won't close when you're done. I have windows 8.1 and I can just drag files onto the command prompt and they'll be added to the command line, I have no idea if all versions work like that.

The output should look like this:

    Code:
    C:\Users\User>D:\Videos\SplitAc3.exe "C:\Videos\MKV\Video.mkv"
    Working ................
    C:\Users\User>
and you should be left with two files called 'Video_20.ac3" and "Video_51.ac3" in the same folder as the source.
