I'm curious — how does a VHS tape get "dirty" in the first place? It spends its entire life in a cassette or being pulled through a closed machine. Is it moldy? Is the surface deteriorating?

Tape has oxides that get released on the heads and tape path and after awhile it builds up.

I've seen a few water damaged VHS tapes at a thrift store. The entire spool of tape was covered in white mold. Would probably ruin any machine that tried to play it.

I've had cats that shed fur all over my house. Never got into my videocassettes. I just don't buy it.
