For the benefit of the few of us here who use Windows 8.1, and did not install the Windows 8.1 Update 1 for some reason, Microsoft has announced that those who do not install Update 1 won't be able to receive security patches after May 13th.
Those still running Windows 8 are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of 8.1 before Mid-October 2014 to receive full support, although Windows 8 will still be able to receive security patches until January 2016.

So what about those that can't? I've run into a few HP laptops (touch screens) that have issues with hanging up during an 8.1 upgrade. It seems to be an issue with touchscreens.

The latest information I found said that Microsoft will supply security updates to Windows 8 itself until January 2016. After that, systems still using Windows 8 should be upgraded to 8.1 with Update 1 (or maybe Update 2 by that point). I guess Microsoft expects HP or the actual maker of the problem component to correct whatever causes this issue and owners to apply the fix before security updates to Windows 8 stop.
[Edit]There is apparently a different issue with installing 8.1 Update 1 to some systems that are already running 8.1 as well
