  1. When I create a VCD I find that the playback on my Sanyo standalone DVD player is jerky and not smooth. I am using TMPGEnc to do the creation and Nero 5.5.5.8 to write the VCDs.

ANy idea why this happens? I am using the VCD PAL template in TMPGEnc.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. You dont say what your source material is. If it is downloaded divx movies there is a good chance they are encoded at 23.97 fps (NTSC film) and converting this to PAL at 25fps would explain the jerkyness

  3. Some are DivX and some are movies that I have ripped directly from DVD.

I have found that if I encode with a bitrate just a bit too high for the player (I have a pioneer) it will play back jerky. Don't know if this would be an isssue here--just a thought.

  5. Your rips may well be NTSC too, depends on the DVD region. All region 1 DVD's will be NTSC. Open the .avi in virtualdub and check the framerate with file->info. If the framerate is 23.97 or 29.97 then the source is NTSC film or NTSC, so you must use the relenat template in Tmpgenc to encode

  6. I had the same problem. I must have gone through 15 cds before i figured it out. I had been burning my s/vcds at max speed. I later learned that you shouldnt burn video faster than the recomended speed of the media you're using ie. 16x. I found if i turn down the write speed to 12x all the mpg files i thought previously unusable worked perfectly. May not help u but...........

  7. The DVDs I rip are all region 2 which is the same as my player, I use the VCD PAL template in TMPGenc and the frame rates are all 25 (PAL).

Instead of using the standard VCD(PA) template, could I get some general feedback on what settings you guys are all using in TMPGenc? Maybe I could get better results by trying some different settings instead of the standard templates.
    Thanks

  8. Hi Sean

I notice it's been 2 months since someone last made a post here. Hope you sorted out the problem.

I make pretty good vcd which play just fine on my Sanyo 1500A. I also had the jerky picture at first but that was due to the incorrect field order.
Make sure it's set to "B lower first"

The last 2 DIVX movies I've converted have been 23.97 fps. They are absolute HORRIBLE when I play them in my dvd player. Is the fact that they're encoded at 23.97 a bad thing? When I encode them with TMPGEnc, I make them NTSC Film. They play fine on my computer when I watch them with Windows Media Player, but when I burn them, they get out of synch at some parts in the movie. Either the audio will lag a bit, or the video will speed up and slow down. I have 3 DIVX movies I'd like to convert into mpg, but I've been holding off because I'm clueless and I'm sick of wasting cds. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Experts?

Thanks Martin, unfortunately I haven't found a sollution yet. I tried burning them at NTSC frame rate and NTSC Film as well as the usual PAL cos my DVD player supports all of them but they are still jerky.

The answer is probably something very simple but if I figure it out I will post back feedback.

    Cheers
