Used one of my own DVDs to practice on, it went well and burned to VCD with Nero. I used Sefys guide. Didn't do the chapters and all, just the movie.
Question 1: when you have a DVD with different audio tracks(Dolby surround, Dolby 5.1, Dolby DTS and others) how do you pick the sound track you want?
#2: After using SmartRipper and DVD2AVI to rip and process the files, when encoding with TMPEG, if the DVD had an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 or 1.33:1, do I need to be sure the "source aspect ratio" under the "advanced tab" is the same? Or does TMPEG automatically select it when you load the audio and video into it? Just took a look at it and the selections it gives are 1:1 and the next being 4:3.

when u use smartripper it auto gets the sound but u then have to mess around with some settings to get it to do surround here's a few things i do some given to me by others on here and i get perfect surround sound..
make the settings in dvd2avi so they match this..
Dolby Digital: Decode
Dolby Digital: Dynamic Range Control: Normal
Dolby Digital: Dolby Surround Downmix
48 -> 44.1KHz - High
Audio/mp3compress/settings change mode to duel channel
Then when useing TMPGenc goto the audio tab and change from stereo to duel channel and it will give u surround sound .. Ive done my last 5 films this way and they are all excellent surround ...
Hope this helps sorry i carnt help you on the other part :( -
under the audio tab in dvd2avi, there's a track selection
as for source aspect ratio, dvd2avi's info box will tell you that...either 4:3 or 16:9....also, image positioning method should be full screen (preserve aspect ratio) or for ppl like me w/ older version of tmpgenc, it would be fit to frame (preserve aspect ratio)
make sure your output video in tmpgenc is 4:3 NTSC if you plan to watch your dvd rips on a regular TV
