  1. I need help playing a movie I downloaded. I downloaded Divx 5.0 pro to see if I didn't have the right codecs and nothing seems to work. All I get is the audio of the movie and a blank screen. The file ends with a .ts.avi extension. This is really frustrating and I would appreciate any help.

  3. I downloaded VirtualDub and it worked so maybe you could try that. Apparently I didn't have the right codecs or something. All I want to do is watch a friggin' movie!!!!

  4. I have seen this problem with downloaded files as well. VirtualDub will play just about everything so if all you are interested in is watching on your computer then VirtualDub will work. If you want to watch the film on a stand alone DVD player, then you need to convert the video to a SVCD or VCD format (MPEG2 or MPEG1). The guides on the left side of this site tell you all you need to know.

My solution is to convert the file in TMPG. You may have to go through a couple of steps depending on the format of the file you downloaded. Again using Virtual Dub, I strip off the audio into a wav file (converting to 44.1kHz from 48kHz if necessary). Then plug the original video and the new wav file into TMPG, select the VCD template (PAL, NTSC, or NTSCFilm) and push Start. After a few hours, you'll have an mpg file you can burn to VCD with VCDEasy or Nero. If the resulting file is longer than 74 minutes, you'll have to break it up into two files. You can do this in TMPG either in the begining of the conversion with Source Range, or after you have converted the entire file with MPEG Tools.

  5. I've fixed tons of .avi files. The best thing you can do is use VirtualDub to open the .avi in it. Depending on what quality the .avi file you have, you need to do two things. I don't know enough about the .avi file format to make the distinction, but if neither of these work, you can't do anything with it.

    1. Open the movie and choose "direct stream copy" on both video and audio and save a new copy of the movie. This is good for incompletely downloaded movies.

    2. Open the movie and re-encode it to the same or a similar DivX codec. This is useful for more serious problems.

I personally use option 1 much more often, so try that, plus it's very quick, only a few minutes for an entire movie.
