'Hot Potato' time
Technically, I call that a 'media conversion'
On 'Da Internet' you will find that called a 'DVDRip'
On here, a DVD Rip should simply be transfer of the original files(ifo, vob etc.) from the disk to your HDD -
You realize,, of course, that "avi" is a container, not a format and not a codec. "avi" can contain video encoded with several codecs (DivX, XVid, QT, etc.).
There are two ways to get video from a DVD to your hard drive. You can copy the .vob files from the VIDEO_TS folder directly onto your PC (a procedure that's known around here as a "rip"). You can combine these VOB's into a single MPG file, then use free software to decode and re-encode the MPEG2 file with another codec and save it in an .avi container. Or you can use decryption software, if required, to transfer a copy from the DVD to your hard drive, then go through the same procedure to decode + re-encode to an avi container.
You can also take the ripped DVD copy or the decrypted MPEG files and decode them to lossless avi with huffyuv, Lagarith, or UTC lossless compression. That type of decoded/lossless video would be saved in an .avi container and is the preferred media type for extensive filtering/editing/correction, etc.
You left out the other part of your question, so I'll ask for you. How do you want to play these re-encoded AVI's (PC-only? Web? tablet or other mini screen? DVD player? BluRay player?)Last edited by sanlyn; 19th Mar 2014 at 08:17.

That depends on the file types that your WDTVLive can play. Hopefully you bought one with a user guide.
