The text in my Firefox browser is fuzzy and difficult to read. I googled the problem and it seems very common in W8. I tried 2 of "fixes" and both failed to fix the problem. Does anyone know a fix that actually works?

Hard to tell which fixes you've tried, since you didn't list them.
I had to go into about:config in Firefox and set gfx.content.azure.enabled to false and set gfxdirect3d.last_used_feature_level_idx to 0.
This solved the issue for me. -
I tried your first suggestion to change the setting to false and that seems to have fixed the problem, thanks.

While I am not a fan of 8 at all, it is a firefox problem. I get the same thing in Windows 7. It started happening about two or three software versions ago. Mozilla has yet to fix it. I toggled the setting quite some time ago, but it broke something else, so I changed it back.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.
