  1. I asked this question here recently and, unfortunately, due to a problem with the forum software, I received a reply with a Windows-only solution.

Perhaps some of you already know the answer to this, but I've discovered it for myself and so, hopefully, this will help others. First, I should mention that I use a Mac Mini as server for all my video (connected to a projector and multi-channel audio system). If the required solution for some is a DVD format, then there may be a problem. However, if the solution is to watch the episodes from your Mac, then the solution is quite easy.

To start, use MakeMKV to convert the DVD to an MKV. Fortunately for us, MakeMKV automatically senses that there are multiple titles on the DVD and so makes multiple MKVs to correspond to each title. The DVD I used had two episodes per disc, so I ended up with two large MKVs. Next, use MKVMerge to add the subtitles to each episode and you're done. Each MKV was over 2GB and included multichannel sound and forced subtitles. It works perfectly with VLC or MPlayer.

Although it is possible to go from MKV directly to DVD, both Toast and Visualhub will lose the subtitles and the multichannel sound. If, however, you use Handbrake to first convert the MKVs to MP4s, the subtitles will remain, however, you'll still end up with stereo sound on the DVDs.

If anyone knows a way around this (end up with a DVD with multiple episodes with subtitles and multichannel sound), I would be quite interested in hearing about it. But, as it stands now, the videos are playable with multichannel audio and subtitles, so there isn't really a problem.
