This article only mentioned watching videos on it. It didn't address playing games on them.

I didnt' catch how much of a curve this particular set had.

I don't understand the point of a curved tv. We've NEVER had a curved tv so why start now?

Well we had the slight bubble on old tube tvs but that's different.

Also about playing games, wouldn't that really throw you off with reading text on the edges of a screen? Or trying to line something up or some other spacially sensitive gaming task.

I think this trend should stop before it starts.

I do see the benefit of that foldable screen stuff they had awhile back. That would be great for the "wearable" tech they are trying to push. But thats small screen stuff that doesn't really depend on "comfort" levels that we are used to on larger screens.

    How about you?

What a brain-dead idea. Only one viewer gets any benefit and then only at a certain viewing distance.

I marvelled at the family's first colour tv (although it broke down several times before its whole circuit boards were replaced).

My dad built the family's very first set (bought piece by piece). Mind you I was too young to actually see that one.

In a word, technology has gone a curved-step too far.

Forgot about the sweet spot issue - it was mentioned in the article.

Now that I think about it this is similar to that old todd a-o format isn't it? The curved movie theater deal from the 50s and 60s?

And also the domed imax stuff that made you throw up - at least induce nausea.

But yes it does seem pointless.

Forget curved tvs - where are the holodecks already? Come on people!!!

  4. A lot of posters over at AVS think that the curved screen thing was just to differentiate the new OLED sets and generate interest. But now we're seeing it on some 4K LCD/LED sets too. It's a terrible idea except for screens over 100 inches or so, maybe. Maybe.

At any rate, LG and Samsung don't seem to be serious about ramping up production of OLEDs. (The Samsung process is a dead-end anyway). They didn't seem serious about selling what few sets they *have* managed to make, having priced them too high. They overdid that, evidently, and have already slashed prices. They still aren't selling, and the curve can't be helping, IMO.

I'm confident the marketplace will consign curved screens to oblivion.

    /nitpick

We've had curved display for oh about 70 years. The CRT just curved outside (convex) and some larger front projection TV had convex screen.

I think that these curved TV's are for people who don't know how to manage their money...

Anyway, when you think about it, aren't CRT type TV's a little curved (just curved the other way)?

To increase the number of spots that are perpendicular to your line of sight.

Idiotic argument, we never had electricity as well.

Obviously you have not tried it.

    That's the whole point, immersion!
The future of watching TV will certainly not be this:

It will be comfortable seats with a personal screen around you:

The current and next generation will marvel at curved personal screens.

Others might prefer to stay in nostalgia land.
