I have read these links for hours and hours but can find no one that has put it togeather. To me the question is very simple. Like millions out here we wish to convert our video material into disks that will play on dvd machines. Home movies in vhs and digital. Back up,s for our game cd,s that our children scratch and break on a regular basis, back up,s for dvd movies we have purchased and heaven forbid we would like a copy of a movie. Yes , I have read reams of comments on various sites but really the manufacturers are targeting the home user. We want it simple and easy. The law says we can have copies and millions are spent to allow us but it is so fragmented it is almost impossible to understand. of course the manufacturers don,t care, they just want us to buy there promises. This is where sites like this come into play!!!!! I hav ethe following toys:Athlon 1800, k7t266Pro, two 40gig 7200 deskstar h/d in raid stripping array, Visontek xtasy ti4600 Geforce4 with 128mg ddr, 256sdram, Plextor 24/10/40a, liteonite dvd/cd ,mother comes with usb2.0, firewire ports. I did not skimp on the computer and will not purchase inferior products to burn MY video. I am not interested in commercial resale, just home entertainment. scvd looks like a very good way to copy and keep quality. Has anyone put this stenario togeather?

So far 14 of you have looked at this post but no replies. I am surprized!!!!!! I figured this would generate alot of contraversy as to what is what. Granted there will be many avenues to get the result but not ONE opinion???????????? Maybe the wrong subject folder. Wrong day?

What are you asking? If you're looking for the best format to transfer your DVDs and videos to, then there is no set answer.
Let's say you want to distribute a child's first birthday party to your friends and family, on a cd. Some of them might not be able to play back formats like Divx or Mpeg2, because of their systems. However, almost anyone with a "modern" computer will be able to play back Mpeg format. In this particular scenario, you might want to sacrifice on video quality, to ensure that everyone can watch your production. -
Wait a minute...is this going to be a discussion on how many movies you can put on a 1.44 Mb floppydisk??

AFWASBORSTEL
how can you ask "what do I want? ". I typed out that I WANT TO COPY MY HOME VIDEOS ,VHS AND DIGITAL, nad MAKE BAKE UPS OF MY DAUGHTERS GAMES AND SOME PRIVATE DVD MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not wish to purchase several dozen downloads and or stand alones to do this. the tech is there!!!!!!!!!!! Somepeople already use it and I will pay for it IF IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT CARE ABOUT RETAIL SALES OF COPIES. JUST WANT TO WATCH HOME MOVIES ETC. ON BIG SCREEN TV. NOT COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!! IS THIS ANY CLEARER????????????????? -
MRTRISTAN,
Most modern dvd players will play vcd. Given the correct format I do not understand how I would lose quality of vhs or digital home movies transferring to vcd format. If I wish to make a back up of a dvd movie then I will need something aditional. I have read that MANY do both. Looking for the ones that can handle multiple formats.

It is difficult to determine exactly what your question is. If you are looking for 1 program that will make copies of your game software, your dvd's and your home analog and digital movies, then the answer is there is none.
Each source you mentioned has different properties and must be treated differently.
For instance, copying of games can be done with several different programs available (CloneCD, CDRWin, etc.).
DVD's can't be simply copied. They must be ripped first. A good set of programs would be:
SmartRipper to rip
DVD2AVI to frameserve
TMPGEnc to transcode
bbMPEG to join and cut
In each case, there are critical settings relative to source and intended output (interlaced, progressive, 16:9, 4:3, NTSC, PAL, TV viewing, computer viewing).
When you include home movies from a camcorder, now you may have to add a video capture card and its settings to the mix.
You also may wish to use all-in-one software that includes most of the aforementioned software in a good GUI.
Then there is burning......... -
read the guides under HOW TO on the left hand side of this web site, most of the software required to do what you want to are available for FREE (uder tools) and there are also detailed instructions available, just requires a bit of time to read it.

CRAIG,
Yes , craige as I stated earlier I read AND printer the HOW TO & Tools. But they are bits and pieces of an entire picture. Many parts don,t play well togeather and some enhance the performance. Just like a computer the parts must work togeather. -
MRTRISTAN,
Funny , I thought it was the comment about floppies that set the tone of your input. OH and buy the way it,s " you are on your OWN." -
Okay, just because I am a nice guy... Try getting your hands on Ulead DVD Movie factory. It will help for the greater part in capturing and converting your movies. It might give not such a great quality. But it will do. Just start with VCD and then later move over to Svcd or DVD.
You ask a lot, and the experience show that you will have to take time to learn to convert. If you want real good Quality you wil need hundred of different programs. And a lot of evenings sweating behind your pc.
And copying of data cd (like games etc.) can be done with Nero.
And please be kind the next time -
MRTRISTAN,
Yes I was short but many hours of precious time and money have been spent already. I get a little impatient. I am really doing this for my daughter whom I love very much and will do all in my power to help. Some of her school work revolves around video editing and such. I will giv eher everything to help her. I am an old dinosaurer and struggle to type but I will prevail. Just hav elearned in years that one should learn from previous mistakes. After all is that not th ebasis of these chat sites????????? -
Ther is no way to install all these varible software ie; nero, smart ripper, windddvd, ulead, etc. without haveing mg,s of redundant dll, files, etc. Not to mention system hangs. Yes certain hardware is needed. standalone plug in devices ( terrapin, ads usb instead, and maybe others take many of those functions themselves without trashing my h/d.
-
Just don't forget it's not going to be easy. It will take a lot of time and effort do make a good conversion.
If it's only about making and editing video's there are a few program's, like Adobe Premiere and Avid DVexpress. They are capabel of capturing movies streams. U only need a capturing card. I for myself use a firewirecard and capture throug my dv out. Buth if you want to capture vhs you need another card for example a Pinnacle DC 10. See left under Capture Cards. These programs can directly output to a DVD recorder.
And don't forget these are not cheap programs.
Hope we have helped you... -
Um, I'm not the one who made the comment about floppy disks, or the one who has bad grammar.
I think this is the person you're looking for: afwasborstel. -
Would like to see if I have a handle on this!
1. NEED IMPUT DEVICE;
ati all in wonder
stand alone- terrapin or ads usbinstant dvd or like device
what is wrong with my video cards svhs/tv in or firewire port or usb ports?
2.NEED SOFTWARE TO FORMAT;
ulead, nero, vcdeasy, etc.
looking at MATE cd burning software. its advertized at top of your site!
would I need this software with one of the aforementioned stand alones?
3.NEED EDITING SOFTWARE;
only if I wish to modify contents of video right?
4. NEED BURNER;
plextor will do all but dvd,s. don,t know about game disks.
dvd burner
Have I got this straight? The better the software the more it can do. Maybe there is software that will format and edit vcd,svcd,and dvd,s.
The burners are a no brainer. Plextor is the best for aqll except dvd and many dvd burners seem to be the same.
So what am I missing? I am not really into editing except for possible bad sections in home movies. Most everything could and probably will get copyed as is. Would like more on game copying. Heard raw mode is the trick. -

Ulead DVDMovieFactory pretty much covers the capturing, editing and burning
