  1. I have a avi file which is quite blocky. Will converting it to Mpeg2 make it less blocky or will it not become any better than the source file?

Will converting a mpeg1 enhance visuals by converting it to mpeg2?

Will the file size increase drastacilly if i convert from avi to mpeg2 rather than to mpg1?

Some help would be greatly appreciated

you can clean up your source with Noise Reduction filters - almost all MPEG converters have some sort of Noise Reduction filter - you can also frameserve from VirtualDub and use a couple of filters at once.

it might become less blocky but bad source can't be improved dramatically

no they are just different formats - the higher the bitrate/resolution the better things look -- you can't 'fix' things by going from one format to another -- the better the source, the better the resulting file

from AVI (I'm going to assume you are using compressed AVI like DivX) to MPEG 1 or 2 is going to get much larger

  3. Thanks for the help. One more quick question:

Will the "motion search precision" quality improve the blockiness? The avi file looks quite good on my pc at at half screen size but when i put onto vcd and run on my dvd at full screen it gets very blocky in hetic action screens.

    Any suggestons?

the key here would be to give me more information - I'm going to take a guess that your asking about TMPGEnc

yes higher motion search will make for a better mpeg -- but it will preserve the quality of the source not improve it -- so if your saying (and I'm guessing again because it's not clear) that your getting blocks after you convert then yes using higher motion search will help

also is that on a standalone DVD player or the DVD player on your computer? 352x240 VCD's never look good at full PC resolution (1:1) - it just can't stand up to 800x600 or 1024x768 but it should look fine on a standalone DVD player

BUT if the resolution of your source was below 352x240 then it's probably always going to be blocky

  5. Will converting it to SVCD make it any better than VCD? Or does that depend on the source as well?
