How to add hard subtitles from srt file to avi movie.

Hi all. Please excuse what is probably a duplication of other posts on similar subject but I am weak on video
manipulation unless it is very simple.
Can someone suggest a simple to use app to put hard subtitles from a srt file to an avi video and specify the step by step process.

BUT the assertion you can add hard subs to a video without re-encoding is just plain wrong. You are modifying the video frames.

Also you can skip the part dealing with ass subs and subtitle edit
