I have a new Nikon CoolPix L820 DSLR which records video as .MOVi have tried 1080p and 720p but the .mov file either does not play or has black screen with audio or film plays but freezes.
i have used VLC, Win media Player, RealPlayer, Quick but all fail. my previous panasonic Lumix filmed as .MOV and all files played OK
the only way i can play the .MOV file is to convert it to .MP4 then play thru VLC, or WMP which is a bit slow. fails on DivX, Quick
my PC is 3GHz 1.2 Gb RAM, Win XP - all software VLC, Win media Player, RealPlayer, Quick is up to date latest version

any help would be greatly received

  2. When you say "Quick" do you mean Quicktime?

Please post a mediainfo report of your file, or a short original sample, and please tell us your system specs while you're at it.

edit: Your system specs are posted, thanks. A P4 XP machine with <2 GB RAM may be a bit underpowered for these files.

Is everything else equal? Bitrate, framesize, framerate? .mp4 tends to be a little more efficient generally.

Set Mediainfo to tree in the view drop-down menu

If none of the of the players you've tried can do it (try MPC-HC as well), your PC is likely underpowered.

A few things come to mind. First, I'm not familiar with Nikon, but many phones and cameras (especially older models) don't create files that play properly without being altered first. The early digital cameras shipped with software specifically for converting video files for use in other devices. This would appear to be the case here as well. As you have what "appears" to be a Quicktime "MOV" file, and yet it isn't playable by Quicktime. Second, as noted and depending on the file specs, your PC is likely underpowered. Although this usually results in choppy playback, as opposed to the file not playing at all.

i shot .mov video on 480 res and it played back OK first time with VLC/Quick/DivX/WinMediaPlayer -it didnt hang or just play audio. are the higher spec video 1080 too much to handle?

  9. It would appear that possibly the specs for your computer are not capable of HD playback. Many things come into play when trying to push the hardware into HD playback. Processor and graphics card along with monitor resoltion all play a part. A WinXP machine with only 1.25Gb RAM probably is below the threshold. Check this posting for a quick read on specs for HD playback.http://askville.amazon.com/minimum-PC-specs-needed-play-HDTV-stream-1920x1080@20Mbps/A...estId=42178921
