i think i posted about this some time ago but now there seems to be some semi-official confirmation that Haswell-E will be 8-core (real 8 core, not AMD "8" core) and support ddr-4, both first for the desktop:

    http://vr-zone.com/articles/heres-first-look-haswell-e-engineering-sample/66688.html

considering intel prices it's top of the line "E" edition processors at anywhere between $500 and $1000, up until now i haven't really considered the "E" edition cpu's particularly good deals.

but, if intel really released an 8 core 16 thread Haswell based beast that supports ddr-4 for $1000, you figure $200-$300 for the motherboard, maybe the same for 16gigs of ddr4, reuse my current case, hdd, power supply and OS, $1600 for that much performance?

i don't know, i may just be able to talk myself into it?

what about you guys? if intel released a lower end 8 core, say in the $500 range, would you consider spending that much cash on such a setup?

No. Because I ONLY buy AMD systems for myself or build them for myself. Somebody has to support AMD. If nobody buys AMD, they go out of business. That would be very bad for consumers. Each person has to decide for themselves what to do.

Not me. I don't do that much encoding these days. And that's the only thing I would need more than four cores for.

I won't be buying one either. I will probably wait until Kaveri comes out to decide, but I'm leaning towards a i5-4750S for my next build. I want a quad core but need something with integrated graphics and a lowish TDP because of summer heat and no AC.

    @wulf:

what exactly does that review have to do with this? those are ivy bridge based hexa core cpu's and i'm talking about 8 core haswell based cpu's that use dd4.

you can be sure that these octo cores will be significantly faster.

    I wouldn't think of it.

The only "beast" level this 2011 addition offers is the long-promised 10 SATA3 support, giving a motherboard the chance to host an ODD, a boot drive and then two 4-disk RAID5s.

Then, let those compare to say an LSI RAID controller's similar config.

Of course, when controller failure occurs, is it going to be easier to find the exact-same motherboard years in the future, or that LSI controller? Hmmm...

Beast, indeed. Something tells me the fantasy of these motherboards in the "$200-300 range" will rival Heinlein. Of course, that might not be the only laugher issue: who's seen a first-generation Memory Module run 'as cheap' as the current crop? I'm thinking four DDR4s will be closer to house-mortgage payments.

Still, I hope that the engineers who designed in a ten-drive SATA4 Memory Controller would have their product blessed by customers who would use them well.

Lol, this posting was only two years old and see where we are now!

You can now easily buy a decent X99 motherboard in the $200-$300 range and DDR4 prices are coming down rapidly, I have seen 4x4GB sets come by for $150 (although I would not recommend this rock bottom stuff).

I just picked up a top board for a steal of $345.

    10x SATA
    10x USB 3.0
    M.2 and Sata express board
    4 way SLI
    Up to 128GB memory

    Made in China!

That should set me safe for awhile!

I think the average consumer has little interest in the next greatest processor from Intel.

The upgrade or perish days are over for most of us....sadly cause it generated a lot of fun and excitement.
