Trying to install Media Player 11 on WinXP SP3 I get "An error has occurred. Cannot copy file connectionmanager.xml to destination directory." There's option to retry or cancel, and several retry attempts fail after which I select cancel. It then indicates install was not completed. Does anyone know the cause of or a fix for this problem?

Look for the file wmp11.log in the \windows directory, and it will have some details about the error.

Around half way down the hundreds of lines of WMp11.log file appears to be the culprit which is "167.484: VerifySize: Unable to obtain Target file size: D:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Network Sharing\connectionmanager.xml." That line is followed by 13 more lines of UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile errors trying to copy connectionmanager.xml, and ends with "178.391: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. 178.391: wmp11 installation did not complete." Then there are a few hundred more lines ending finally with "84.297: Software Update Rollback has completed successfully. The original error message was: 0x1." After Setup fails, it prompts to restart, and Media player is folled back to WMp9 as indicated by the log.

The WMp11.log file does seem to indicate what happened, but what causes the errors and how to fix the problems? Any ideas?

FWIW: the "normal" installer.EXE for WMP11 actually contains other installers --- the REAL wmp11 installer and the Windows Media Format 11 installer, to say the least. Try extracting the contents of the "official" EXE into a temporary setup folder (either 7-Zip or The Universal Extractor should do the trick), and then run the standalone installers.

BTW: the "normal" installer is WGA-infected, this is the main reason to avoid it.

P.S.: possibly the *most recent* versions of the full installer cannot be properly decompressed via 7-Zip, and in this case, just find an old version of the damn thing.

The only WMp11Setup file I can find is the 1 at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-media-player-details.aspx. Where can the "official" EXE be found?

How about installing WMP 10 and see if that installs? If it's successful, try 11 afterwards.

Also, may be worth doing a full virus/malware scan.
Also, if you still have the wmp11.log, post it here as an attachment. (zip it first).

It gives message "This version of Windows Media Technologies is not compatible with this version of Windows" when I try to install Media Player 10. Attached is wmp11.zip which is the zipped wmp11.log file.

  9. Is your program files directory actually on drive D?? This is a bit unusual.

Where and how is the installation file stored?

The links in reply #8 all lead to the same wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu I already downloaded and ran which gives the errors.

Program files are on D drive which is where WinXP is installed. I tried running the installation file from IE7 without storing it, and I tried saving to and running from the desktop; both ways results in same errors.

FWIW, these are the contents of the SFX .exe:

    In other words, you DIDN'T.

By "official" or "normal", I meant the downloaded installer, not wmp11.exe or wmfdist11.exe.

And of course, it shouldn't matter the sites from which you download it.

Anyway, see you again in 2014, I'm too tired now

Have you looked in the control panel/
add/ remove programs . Is there an entry for "windows media player" If so, uninstall, reboot
and see which version is installed. Then retry wmp11.

Your log shows that wmp 11 was installed on Jan 17 2010.

Of course I didn't. One can't do what you recommended without the "official" file which I've said in replies #10 and #12 are unavailable from the links you gave. I also did some searches for the "official" wmp11 download, and all searches either indicate page not found or take me to the same "normal" wmp11 file that I've tried numerous times which gives the errors. What part of appears to be unavailable don't you understand?

The log file shows wmp11 install could not complete and rollback to previous version was completed. WMp9 is the version I see at the completion of every failed WMp11 install attempt.

  16. WMP11 installed without a hitch on my old XP rigs, something must be wrong with your PC. Besides running an OS that is obsolete I notice you are also running IE7 which is very obsolete, time to upgrade.

WMp11 Installed without a hitch on another old XP PC I have but not on this one. This problem arose on this PC before a recent motherboard upgrade and persists after the upgrade. I seriously doubt there was something wrong with both the old and the new motherboards and suspect either Windows screwed up something to cause the install to fail or there's something wrong with the install files.

Take a look at D:\Program Files\Windows Media Player in Windows Explorer.
do you have either a file or folder in there called "Network Sharing" ?

If so, rename the object to "oldNetwork Sharing"
Create a new folder in D:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
    called "Network Sharing"

retry the install of WMP 11.

That last sentence of yours there jogged my memory, and I now remember wmp11 was installed under SP2. Some time after that SP3 was installed which was followed by a need to do a repair install which reverts back to the wmp9 that comes with XP as you are probably aware. The failure of wmp11 install ever since SP3 was installed seems to indicate the problem has something to do with SP3. I'll try your last suggestion regarding the Windows Media Player folder when I get back to that PC since I'm at a different location currently.

Edit: Just tried the reply #18 suggestion, found and renamed file "Network Sharing" and created a "Network Sharing" folder and retried wmp11 install. That resulted in no connectionmanager.xml error, but it now gives "Error copying the file wmccds.exe. Cannot copy file to destination directory."

Taking your idea 1 step farther I saw in the wmp11.log file a January 17, 2010 entry where there was a "Copied file: D:\Program Files\Windows Media Connect 2\wmccds.exe" line in the log. Then I found and renamed the file "Windows Media Connect 2" in the Program Files folder, created a "Windows Media Connect 2" folder in the Program Files folder and retried wmp11 install. Bingo! Wmp11 install went to completion. That was a brilliant idea, and I thank you very much!
