  1. You can't just drag/drop files from a CSS encrypted DVD to your hard drive. That's the whole point of the encryption. All CSS protected commercial DVDs are like that. You have to use a CSS licensed player to play the original disc or use DVD decryption software like DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab Decrypter, DVD43, etc.

  2. At the risk of repeating myself, the scrambling problems occur when I play the disc from the optical drive with WMP/MPC-HC, as I mentioned in #30 and in several other posts previously.

The question I'm trying to get answered is whether or not this erroneous behaviour is likely to be resolved by removing CSS encryption from the disc.

I'm not asking about the correct method of ripping DVDs to a hard drive.

    Thanks!

  3. Some versions of MPCHC have no DVD decryption ability. Older versions of WMP didn't either. Even with players that have decryption ability you need use the "Play disc" feature. You can't just navigate with Explorer and click on an IFO or VOB file.

  4. Yes. I know. As stated in the OP, the problem occurred when using the codecs supplied with the latest version of K-Lite codec pack in conjunction with these players.

One more time (sigh): The question I'm trying to get answered is whether or not erroneous behaviour such as that described is likely to be resolved by removing CSS encryption from the disc. Yes? No? Maybe?

Why don't you just try it and find out? The tools are free.

Another thing , does the disk play properly in a standalone player connected to the TV?

By 'remove the CSS' I meant manufacture a new disc without CSS. Not free.

Unless you meant copy the data via DVD Decrypter etc and play it in the same software that exhibits the error when playing from the disc?

Yep, no problem in that department.

    Yes, that's what I meant.

By the way, I wouldn't trust KLite.

  10. Thanks everyone -- with the help of all the above we've narrowed down the problem to the incompatibility of specific unsupported codecs with the specific CSS implementation used on this disc.

Most CSS implementations appear to be decryptable with these codecs, but not ours for some reason (the manufacturer doesn't know why).

Bad luck for us that it's a particularly widespread codec.

    Cheers!

  11. hey peanut,

An very simple way to determine if its realy an an copy protection that is at large is to install slysoft anydvd and start it in the background while playing the disc in the software apps that give you those twisted / distorted images!!

Anydvd will decrypt and rectify ur dvd (even if its an copy made from the original) so the dvd play nice in software players..

I have noticed that some of my dvd collections navigate problematic through root/title menus (just because of an half baken decryption in the ripp process !!)

But when i fire up anydvd to run in the background, the problematic dvd's go strait to the main menu whitout any delay's you know!!

Sometimes, u can hear ur dvd-rom device make sounds.. thats mostly because 1.bad authored disc 2.partial copy protection still on the content of the dvd!!

So, yeah iam recognize ur problem all to well..

Have had see those blocks appearing before when i tried to play the original silver pressed dvd tv-episoded discs in software players !!

Yep, for example the shield did that occasionaly (not alway's though) in windvd pro !! Showing those artifacts/blocks in image and such, is ussuall an copy protection still at large ahheh.

    succes,

Codecs do not perform CSS decryption. A CSS decrypter performs the decryption then the codec decompresses the video.
