Alright everybody, I'm going to start over. I'll do another clip. This time I'll start playing the tape before I make all the settings. Also, in answer to RWH's question, if you scan back through this thread, you will see a screen capture of all the available settings and the error message that I get if I try to apply the wrong ones. But, I'm going to try it all again. I sure do appreciate all of your time and patience with me.

Is this the setting that works?
Did switching to composite cable get color back? -
Here is a clip of a factory made tape of Danny Ganz. It was suggested above to use a known good tape so this is the only one that I have that I am sure of. I hope this is what you wanted. If not, let me know.
-
Yes that is the only setting that seems to work. And last night I tried switching cables but it didn't change anything. I gave up last night because wifey was demanding my presence in front of the tv. Anyway, this morning I tried a completely new setup with a different tape etc. It is now showing in color. Who knows.................
-
That setting is perfect. Did you get the frame rate set properly?
Can you save and upload just one frame? Just to check your setup.
In VirtualDub the little buttons at the bottom. One of them will let you advance a frame at a time.
Or post a screenshot of File > File Information.Last edited by RWH; 9th Dec 2013 at 14:36.

I did go back and do that before I captured the single frame. I forgot to do it prior.

If it's set to 29.97. You have to recapture from tape again. Then upload a frame of that capture. Getting close.
-
-
Your info screenshot for the single frame still isn't correct. The right setting is "almost 30", not "almost 28", if that helps. Not sure how else it could be messed up other than mistyping.
-
Ok, I see the problem. My old eyes thought they saw something they didn't. I'll correct it.
-
Excellent. How about uploading a few seconds of this capture now. About 30 frames per second so maybe 150 frames.

Wifey and I are going out for a while. She wants to go see a movie. I'm not thrilled but it's not my call. Oh well..............I'll be back in a couple of hours or so. Of course going to a movie also means dinner out. Damn.

I think it looks pretty good. Now's a good time to play with some controls and monitor with VirtualDubs histogram.
Maybe you should go back to a non commercial tape. Not sure about legal issues. -
And the audio was in sync this time. Good work. You deserve dinner out......as long as the wife pays ? ?

Being as how he is no longer among the living, I'll take my chances with the legal stuff. I am looking forward to the actual tutoring on making changes and so on. But, please go slow. I am still not sure about all the terms and where to find stuff in the menus etc. I am having a blast and really like the idea of learning how to do all this. I know it will take a long time but I love the learning curve.

It looks like the capture process is working now. Can you turn off the noise reduction circuit on the VCR? It's resulting in ghosting. A 4x point resize:
Look at his lapel -- you can see ghosts of where the edge was in several previous fields (he's moving from left to right). That's caused by an over aggressive temporal noise reduction filter.Last edited by jagabo; 9th Dec 2013 at 18:47.

Here's the manual if you don't have it. Page 37 TBC/NR settings. Also a stabilizer setting.

On a commercial tape you probably don't need or want it. On your home tape you might. -
I thought I remembered that some JVC decks link the noise reduction and TBC features. It looks like that's the case here. I guess you'll have to decide which is the lesser evil.
You also probably want to keep the edge enhancement feature disabled. Those almost always cause ringing (halo) artifacts. I'm pretty sure it wasn't on in the capture in post 229. Here's a simulated example of an over sharpening halo:
Notice how his lapel has a bright band at the edge, and his shirt has a dark band right next to it.Last edited by jagabo; 9th Dec 2013 at 20:00.

Is it just a matter of trial and error then? Will the video stabilizer option help? I guess in Oldretiredguy's case. There are 3 options. TBC/NR on, Stabilizer on, or both off. Will the procamp controls help at all?

Ok, I altered the settings that you suggested. And just for the sake of information, I did get the manual with the machine but all the stuff that you are referring me to up to this point means nothing to me. I would never have had any inkling of changing those settings. This is what I mean by "I am a real newbie right out of the womb" so to speak. I really DO need my hand held for a while until I get familiar and comfortable with what you are telling me to do. But don't give up on me. I really do want to learn this and I am fascinated by it already. S. how would I go about fixing what you are showing me that is bad in this clip?

here is a new clip made after making the changes to the vcr.
