  1. Up until today XMedia Recode would recode, for example, a clip 1280 x 720 at bitrate of 2,140 Kbps, 26.7 MB (MP4) to 480 x 272 at 700 Kbps, 32.1 MB (AVI) for use in my 4.3" tablet. I prefer AVI because then I can use VirtualDub to trim unwanted leaders and tails. Now, when I recode the same clip at the same resolution, bitrate, etc, the rendered file size is just over 200 MB.

Because I lower the resolution and bitrate, I expect the file to be smaller, though it might be because MP4 has better compression. I've not updated the XMedia, so the codec used in both cases in the same (H.264). Mediainfo confirms the specifications are as set as intended, so I don't understand why the file size (> 200 MB) is so large now. Can anybody throw some light on the matter?

Did you cut on key frames in VirtualDub?

  3. Thanks for responding.

No, I used the original file. I use VD only after recoding, using the trim feature for lossless reconstruction.
