I have a number of DVD9 double disk sets and I plan to make a number of DVD5 disks from them.

So I guess I need software that will take VOBs from various folders.

That will order them in the order I want.

That will show me 'previews' of them so's I know what's in each VOB.

That will knock up some kind of menu, ideally, but I'd settle for just play them.

And will then burn. Or at least write an image or something to disk so's I can burn it with something else.

I did find a thread that went to this question but it was 10 years old.

Freeware is best, I'm far from rich.

Did have Nero but it seems to have crashed since I had to do an OS reinstall. I've been using WinXDVD author but unless I've not been using it properly it falls short of what I want.

I've got Imgburn and DVDShrink. I'm fairly incompetent with each of them.

    Any help?

You can use dvd shrink in the reauthor mode to join double discs. But you will lose the menus.

You should not just work with vob files.

Yes.....don't worry about VOB files. Although every DVD has them, they are not what you think they are.
IE....the part of the DVD that you want will most likely span across two VOB files.

Thanks for that. It's an enormous education because I was totally unaware the VOB files was the wrong way to go. I thought they were exactly the way to go. I thought each VOB was like one movie or part of the movie, like a reel of old style film.

So what do I need to do?

And I'm not trying to join two disks. The opposite really. I have DVD9 disks that I want to split into a couple of DVD5 disks.

That's because using DVD Shrink to shrink them onto DVD5 wasn't very successful. So I came up with the idea of not compressing them but just extracting them: make a couple of uncompressed DVD5's out of each.

    By pulling the VOBs off.

Seems that's the wrong way to go. Wrong way to even think of it.

So what do I do? What software do I use?
