    Greetings mates,

This is my first post here. I have been reading and learning a lot from this great forum for many years.

Now I do have a question that I couldn't find the answer in the forum's past posts.
I am trying to catalog about 3000 video clips. I came across a program called Fast Video Cataloger. the program is great and does everything I want. it catalogs the files, lets the user assign actor and tags and best of all it creates thumbnails of all clips. Now the bad part. the program costs $200. I tried the 7 day trial version of it.
    So here comes the question:
Does anyone know of any other program that catalogs video files (not movies) and also creates thumbnails for the clips?
I don't mind paying for the software, but somewhat less than $200

There is no emoticon to display my reaction to the sheer arrogance and condescension involved in charging that much for what is actually a pretty simple search/index application.

    Try the free one mentioned.

ms excel or access if you have some time to type everything. anyway.

thats probably a typo. $20 maybe.

create 1 thumbnail at this position:
    ffmpeg -ss 00:00:01.000 -i video.avi -f image2 -vframes 1 -s 64x64 -y g:\thumb_%03d.png

    thumbnails a certain interval, i.e., every second, named out_0001.png, out_0002.png, ...
    ffmpeg -i video.avi -f image2 -vf fps=fps=1 -s 64x64 -y thumb_%03d.png

That program is not too bad. But when I tried to take a snap, it seemed that it wrote a file, but no.

If you click on the "camera" Icon it will add the video frame you have in the player to the videos thumbnail timeline, it will not save out any file.

If you right the camera icon and select "save as file" it will save out a jpeg image file ( in version 3 and later )

Is a "cataloger" a person who catalogs or would he/she be called a catalographer?

A catalographer is a videography sub-specialty. They take videos of the catalogers creating catalogs A catalographist would be needed as well.
