  1. I'm trying to import an AVI into Vegas. At first it couldn't but after I got a xvid codec, I was able to import the video but not the audio. The audio info in the Explorer window reads "stream attributes could not be determined, MPEG Layer-3."

    Any suggestions?

You could just extract the audio to wav from the avi with for example Pazera Free Audio Extractor. Then import the wav in vegas.

    You need Lame. http://lame.sourceforge.net/.

Or what Baldrick said works fine too. It's good to know how to separate audio/video anyway.

  4. Installed Lame but no luck. I tried the various installation instructions provided with one of them telling me it's not compatible on my system (64bit.)

But that's alright, the application Baldrick suggested works just fine. :]

    Thank you very much guys!

Actually, you probably need the whole codec pack. K-Lite Full.

I do already have that actually.

I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to video codecs, are there perhaps some settings I need to tamper with?

The trick is to get Vegas to open "AVI" with ffdshow.

The way to test for this is to see if the "Render As" dialog includes a "Video For Windows" option, then open the "Config" box and see if ffdshow is in there as an option.

Still no workee, then re-install K-Lite, or use the "Tweak Tool" to make sure the right codecs are enabled, and double check the video too, if it's Xvid. Classic AVI should be Xvid, but they're using it for H264 now too.

If that's the case you will need the X264 codec installed.

OK, then re-install K-Lite with the latest version. It's all-in-one, 64/32 bit. Vegas has to be restarted as well.
