I've been using rebox.net successfully for the past year or so on Windows 7 x64 to convert my mkv files for use on the Apple TV. I've just done a totally clean installation this week of Windows 8.1 and now I find when rebox.net does the initial scan of an mkv file I get the following error: "Sorry, the needed information generated from the input file cannot be found."

Rebox.net itself installed without any problems it launches ok too. I've tried using the compatibility wizard to get it to run under Windows 7 settings but to no avail.

It doesn't seem to be an issue with the mkv files themselves as the same ones that give an error on Windows 8.1 convert fine on another Windows 7 x64 pc.

I've had a look at mvktomp4 which looks like it could be a good replacement if there's no sign of getting rebox.net working.

Anyone else come across this yet?

What kind of video is in the .mkv files? Microsoft removed a good deal of Windows 7's video functionality from Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. For example, neither OS provides the ability to play MPEG-2 video and DVDs unless using the Pro version with Windows Media Canter installed.

    Hey, thanks for the reply.

The files are just standard h.264 HD tv show rips acquired online. I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro with the Media Center addition. Files play absolutely fine in Media Player Classic & VLC and CCCP is the only codec pack I've installed.

Also, the files convert no problem using MKVTOMP4 and XMedia Recode but I prefer using Rebox.net as it's nice and handy.

VLC uses its own internal video and audio decoders. MPC uses external decoders and doesn't have to depend on ones provided by Windows. I don't use Rebox.net and I can't say for sure what is missing, but it may depend on a Windows component or a .NET component currently missing from your Windows 8.1 install. Maybe you can contact the author later to report your problem. (I just tried to see if there was a way to contact the author at http://www.clonead.co.uk/ but got a server down message when I clicked on "About".)

Just to let everyone know in case anyone else comes across this problem, managed to get it working tonight by playing around with the new compatibility wizard built in to Win 8.1. Once it's set to run in XP compatibility mode, worked perfectly.

The compatibility stuff is actually really good in Win 8.1. It also got drivers for my scanner working which is meant to be incompatible with 8.1.
