Hello all - I am a complete newbie to all things video/ripping related, so hopefully someone will be able to offer me some help.
I am currently in the process of ripping my DVD collection to my PC, to be stored on my hard-drive or an external drive.
One of my more tech-savvy friends recently installed DVDFab 9.0.7.2 on my PC to assist me with this.
So far, so good - vast majority of the films and TV shows have successfully ripped, and play back fantastically (I have tested them via my Windows Media Player on my PC, and by copying the files to a USB stick and playing them on my Xbox 360's video player). The reason why I am ripping to an AVI file was at the recommendation of my friend, as this format is compatible for files played through my Xbox 360. Right now, I am watching a good ripped file via USB stick plugged into my console, and it is playing back just great.
However, some of the files have not ripped so well. Although the sound-picture are well in-sync, there is this annoying "juddering" at some points (when played on PC and Xbox). It doesn't interrupt the syncing with the sound, but nonetheless it is annoying. It isn't just restricted to "high octane" or fast panning scenes - there is a scene with two characters talking, yet the picture "hops" even though the sound still keeps in time. I can't explain this any better, so I hope that makes sense. It is very strange, and there is nothing evident to me that would suggest what DVDs would become a problem. My tech-savvy friend unfortunately does not have the time to help me!
I have tried messing around with the quality within the options screen and trying MP4 instead, but the issue is still there for these particular files. Is there any way I can combat this and fix it? I have uploaded two text files which detail the Media Info for one of the good rips, and the annoying juddering rip. I am not sure what further info you would need, but I will do my best to answer. My system settings should hopefully be near my forum signature(?).
Thanks for your time, hopefully someone can help.

First off, just so there is no confusion on terms, most of us here use the term ripping to describe the process of moving the data from the original disc to the hard drive. When working with commercial dvds, this also involves decryption. Changing the format to xvid avi is conversion.
There aren't many members at Videohelp who would recommend DVDFab for any type of conversion. It can be used to decrypt and rip the movie to the hard drive if you wish. But there are many other choices for conversion, including the old standby AutoGK, Video to Video Converter, and Xvid4PSP. Those program require that you decrypt first.
If you'd like to convert to H264 MP4, Handbrake or VidCoder should be fine. But I don't encode for XBox 360, so I'll let someone else help you with settings in those programs. -
Hello.
The mediaInfo text doesn't tell us all that much, but it does say this: your tech savvy friend should know better than to deinterlace and re-encode DVD to lower-quality lossy bitrates that appear to be 1/3 to 1/4 that of the original (which is also a lossy encode to begin with). Animation should never go through straight deinterlacing, as it is likely telecined for 25FPS playback.
It would be more interesting and informative to show MediaInfo for the DVD original, as well as a sample of the ruined results.Last edited by sanlyn; 20th Mar 2014 at 05:34.

DVD Shrink is still excellent for the downsizing DVD9 > DVD5.
And BD-Rebuilder for Blu-ray.
DVD Fab is just for decrypting.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The tried and true way (at least for me) is to rip the DVDs using DVDFab or my favorite, AnyDVD HD/Clone DVD. After you got them ripped with the copy protection stripped, use Handbrake to convert the VOBs/Video_TS to MP4 using the "normal" preset with the following settings:
Picture Size: Strict Anamorphic
Video: H.264, frame rate 30fps constant frame rate, Average bitrate 10240 kbps, 2-pass encoding
Audio: AAC (faac), bitrate 192, mixdown automatic
The produced MP4 will be of excellent quality, much better than AVI and in sync. The "Normal" preset used consisting of Main Profile H.264 with AAC-Low Complexity audio in an MP4 container is supposed be compatible within Xbox 360 specs. -
Forgive me, but although I am not completely useless when it comes to working a computer, this is a completely new area to me and I do not understand some of the lingo.
I have just given DVD Shrink a go, but its not what I need - I merely want to back up all of my DVDs to my hard-drive as either AVI or MP4 files, not do any burning etc. So, bearing in mind I am not as technically minded as one would like to be, what programmes would be recommended if not DVDFab?
I have uploaded a file of the juddery video which I hope helps. I don't know how to get MediaInfo for the DVD original - when I right-click on it but there is no option for this? When you view the file, its mainly clear in the first minute, i.e. when they begin talking, and the male actor gets up out of his chair.
I am really not sure what settings to use for optimal quality etc, it is quite difficult to ascertain. My friend pretty much left me to get on with it, on the assumption that I could suss out what needed to be done quite quickly. -
Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but the offending DVD disc itself plays terribly through my Windows Media Player, yet is fine when played through the Xbox 360's disc drive - not sure if this is connected at all with the poor copying through DVDFab?

Thanks for the sample.
The problem isn't judder, but jerky playback due to missing frames and to duplicated frames (usually 3 dupes, but at one point I saw 5 dupes of the same frame). I don't use decrypters, but I have seen complaints about some of them that are similar to these results. The only way to blame the decryption process is to see a sample of the original, decrypted MPEG video before before it was re-encoded. you can use DGIndex to cut a short sample. We need only several seconds of video with motion, hopefully a shot that includes one of the scenes with missing or duped frames in the sample you posted). DGIndex is free and fairly simple. A brief explanation of how to cut a sample and post it is here: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/359295-Record-without-interlacing?p=2272359&viewful...=1#post2272359 .
The video does have some color garbage and other low-bitrate artifacts. It doesn't bother some people but is unviewable to others for any period of time. As DVD "backup" it is non-compliant for standard DVD, BD, or AVCHD. But apparently that's not a concern here.
Windows Media Player is not a standard for judging playback performance, so I can't make conclusions about the way it plays copy protected DVD's.Last edited by sanlyn; 20th Mar 2014 at 05:34.
