Hopefully you know what a media player is. Here is a list https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/video-players
MPC-BE player is popular as well and plays HD: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPC-BE
This is also popular: VLC Player https://www.videohelp.com/tools/VLC-media-player

...And as lordsmurf notes, many videos are copy-protected and/or can't be downloaded.

But the original poster was not asking how to play 1080p videos, he was asking how to download them from YouTube. He needs an updated downloader, not a media player.

YouTube now uses the protocol DASH to stream videos (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). Current YouTube download programs can't handle DASH. When they use the YouTube API to disable DASH, YouTube has blocked 480p and 1080p from non-DASH streams. 360p and 720p should still work until YouTube also disables those resolutions for non-DASH.

For those who don't know, DASH is basically a technology that segments videos. The full entire video is no longer buffered, instead they are segments. This is the reason all YouTube download programs and other download programs like jdownloader broke this past week.

The O.P.'s request has replies for several suggested download apps. But to be asked if there is a working HD media player and to get "??" for answer to that question.....

  16. I don't get it why you need to know what media player I use, that's why I posted "??"

What does "nothing's working properly" mean? What does "1080p support" mean? MPC and VLC players have what they need for a great many codecs.

  18. If you look closer you will see a "?" It's a question I posted because I thought nobody advises me a tool, because no tool supports 1080p youtube streams. But now I have a list with some tools that cost something and I really don't get why you need to know what media player I use?

Basically, YouTube "broke" all the YouTube downloaders by implementing the DASH protocol. 1080p can no longer be downloaded, until the developers update their programs to support DASH.

MPC and VLC are very good media players, but they don't download YouTube. flashandpan007 is asking for a YouTube downloader that was updated to support the DASH protocol.

Then let's leave the rest of this to Vidd, who is able to divine words and ideas that don't appear in the O.P.'s cryptic posts. I now get that "nothing works propely?" refers to downloading problems, not to his computer setup in general.

  24. Don't be angry, but look at your posts. You clearly understood what I need: but video download helper (I used it for a long time) doesn't work anymore. Then you asked me if I don't have a media player. I really don't get that.
Anyway, this discussion doesn't help anybody in this forum.

Thank you all for the suggested tools, but maybe there is a freeware tool/browser addon?

  26. Okay...so let me rephrase...the link: http://www.videoyoutubedownloader.com/ is for Chris PC Youtube Downloader, install it, copy a Youtube link into it or if open will paste a video link from your clip board automatically. It will recognize that it's 1080p DASH, will convert it to mp4 (1080p) and then dl it to folder of your choice. Play it with player of choice and be happy.

Hi guys... it's been a long time... Now it seems YouTube (Google) is showing its real face. Chris PC is not working for me. It seems to download the whole thing at 1080 but after preparing the audio, I've found out that the file has only a small portion of the beginning of the video file and the rest is nothing but the whole audio file. Is that a DASH problem or whatever?
    Thanks in advance

    Edited:

I tried again this afternoon and this time it worked. It takes a long time to download (longer than Firefox Helper) but it works. I hope they fix Helper soon. That add-on is fantastic but this proggie works fine.

Thank you. Finally a solution to download the 1080p DASH. The download and conversion are very fast.
It can also download 480p DASH. Here's a video which has 854x480 :

mass tube is what i use for 1080p , it only downloads one at a time, but you can queue the next one in, to save time. works great, and is a free app.
