I hooked-up a Philips DVP5982 DVD player to an HDMI switch with an LG BR player. When it switched to the DVP5982 I saw a very brief message, which I think said Not HDCP compliant. The picture from the 5982 switches on and off. I'm using the switch passively,no power supply. The 5982 works normally when I hook to my JVC HDTV directly via HDMI cable.

Maybe the Philips DVD player doesn't supply enough current to power the switch. Did you try connecting it with the power supply plugged in? A link to the switch would be helpful.

Likely the cheap HDMI switch thinks your Philips player is not HDCP compliant. That's possible. But perhaps you can tell us how a non-electronic non-powered switch box gets the power to display a message on your TV. I'd say the message is from your TV, not from the box.

It is a cheap generic $20.00 5-1 switch. It happens to be a "Cables Unlimited" brand. You can see many like it on newegg. I don't believe I said the switch caused the message, clearly the HDTV generated the message.

I have a couple of five and four input HDMI switches and they work OK. They are both powered. Also a powered HDMI splitter. No problems.
HDMI can be a bit of a PITA at times. It can take a second or so for the handshake to work. I would first try different cables. If that fails, maybe replace the switch. I've never had much luck with passive HDMI switches.

Both of my switches are from Monoprice.

I'm thinking along the same lines as Redwudz. You would be better off with a switch that has its own power supply rather than one that only receives power via its HDMI connections. It could be the cable isn't making good contact, or it could be the DVD player isn't supplying enough power.

Theres no such thing as a non-electronic non-powered switch box for hdmi,it's an electronic hdmi switch box that gets its power from the hdmi 5+v,some devices and tvs cant recognize it due to not enough power it gets from the hdmi connection.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

I hooked up my Philips 5990 and it works normally thru the switch. It would appear the 5982 was the cause. As one poster suggested it probably doesn't output enough current.
