  1. Hi. I seem to be caught in a pickle over here. Im currently doing video capture with MSI afterburner and using x264vfw codec to record. Thing is I need to do lots of tiny edits to the video and most of my videos are only at about 30-90 secs long and I cant use virtual dub to edit the files. The video comes out ok(including the cuts) but the audio is out of sync. Avidemux just plain crashes. From my basic understanding its because t it can only cut in specific frames? So maybe my videos are too short for it to cut accurately enough.

I could go back to using the mjpg codec but the files size is humongous even for short videos. But since i have no choice but to make edits to the video i feel I have to go this route. Im gonna rerecord my stuff and then see if using handbrake will give me good file size and without loss in quality. So far it dosent seem very good with the little amount of times I've used handbrake.

What should I do? Take the filesize hit and stick with Mjpg or record longer videos and maybe have better luck cutting with avidemux? Or perhaps there is a better way to edit the x264 files in Vdub?

    Please advise.

    Cheers.

  2. 264 video is not for editing. it's a final delivery format. gops can be up to 250 frames. use a different format.

  3. What is the file extension? You can try VideoRedo or TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer but I don't know since I don't capture as such.
For Avidemux, only cut on "I" frames.

  4. If you must use x264vfw and plan to edit later, capture with very short GOPs (<10 frames) and no bframes. And, of course, use very fast settings like the Ultrafast preset.

  5. I guess I will stick with MJPG for now. I record at 1080 then use handbrake to recode in 720. Reduce the overall size but not much loss in quality as opposed to recording in x264 720 but pulling my hair out trying to edit the file later on. Tested a few videos and Im ok with the quality, capturing at 1080 first helps with that.

Can you go into detail with this please? I see the preset option but not the other stuff you mentioned.

With the ultrafast preset the default is no bframes. To get short GOPs use the "Extra Command Line (for advanced users)" box at the bottom of the dialog. Enter "--keyint=10" without the quotes. If you use another preset and need to specify no bframes add "--bframes=0". Ie, the content of the box should look like:

    Code:
    --keyint=10 --bframes=0
