I currently have been using TDA 1.6 for years, but never liked that after editing a dvd the subtitles where no longer forced onto the tv screen, which is a huge pain because no i the movie has subtitles, you have to manually set in from the dvd remote, and most times I forget that only a few scenes a particular movie have subtitles then have to back the dvd up to where the character is speaking another language and set the subtitles to display.

So I am looking for a dvd authoring program that is as simple as TDA to use (do any later versions of TDA force subtitles like unedited movie?)

You can use multiavchd which will allow forced subtitles.

I thought multiavchd wasn't updated anymore?

I suppose when dealing with dvds that shouldn't be a factor but if you are converting from high def that might be a problem somewhere along the conversion path.

Edit - just to be clear you can use "abandonware" it's just that if you run into problems you probably won't get any updates unless the designer really wants to go back into the program.

Does avstodvd offer this option? It offers so much but I don't know if this is one of them.

Not sure why you said that you thought multiavchd wasn't updated anymore when i said it can output dvd-video with forced subs,it still does a good job authoring.

TDA 1.6 is pretty good, but why stay in 2004? Version 5 is sold now, is more versatile, is better, and you can get a discount. Sometimes updating more often than every 9 years or so can bring less frustration.

Does it still (like versions 2-4 of TDA/TAW) use a built-in mpeg-2 encoder, which is on by default for re-encoding keyframes on chapter points and re-encoding the very last GOP (without ability to turn it off), and encoding LPCM to ac3 (also on by default for any new project)? These 'features' make me still use TDA1.6 (or muxman in case of multiple audio or subs) in combination with TAW4 for menus only (that's where I find newer versions to be good and convenient).

PGCEdit can easily set subs to be on by default.

DVD players can still give discs the finger. It won't be forced.

I have several players that disobey instruction all the time. I can do what I want.

If you wanted "forced" subtitles, then simply embed them in the video.
    Problem solved.
