  1. Hi all!

Just got back with my rental Sony HDR Z1, pluged the whole thing via firewire, and Premiere gives me "Can't activate recorder, try resetting the camera", so I googled around found this solution:

OK. My problem was that somehow the base DV Video Encoder/Decoder was not registered. Somehow my registry was overwritten and buggered.

The solution, for me, was to download a utility called GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) to identify the un-registered codec.

In my case it was the DV Video Decoder and DV Video Encoder. Figuring out which dll this referred to was problematic but having a colleague run GSpot on his system gave me a clue since it identified the file associated with the codec. In this case qdv.dll.

Then I went to the Start menu and selected Run then typed "regsvr32 qdv.dll".

Immediately Premiere recognized the capture device and problem solved.

OK downloaded the River Past DirectShow detective and found out that I have the same problem, but the regsvr32 qdv.dll fix gives me a message that the .dll has been registered successfully, but after I restart the DirectShow detective the situation is the same, of course I tried rebooting the PC.

I also tried Scenanalayzer Live, that can use the camera's controls but tells me that there is no video coming through so now I'm sure that the problem is with the DV encoder/Decoder, but how do I get it registered in Win 7 64bit?

  2. You may be chasing the wrong solution.

Windows 7 64bit has known issues supporting firewire cards. That is far more likely to be the cause of your problems than a codec. Hopefully someone who has gotten it to work will chime in.

But even before that, are you shooting DV or HDV, is your camera set to output the correct one, and is Premiere also set for the proper type of project?

  3. I'm shooting in HDV and yes to both questions. I asked the owner what he users so I just did everything he does when working with this camera.

I hope you didn't mess up things by following those instructions. You're dealing with HDV, not simply DV. I have Win 7 64-bit, using a firewire card to transfer HDV footage. Initially, I had similar problems getting Win 7 recognize the camcorder device (in this case a Canon HV40), but quickly remedied the issue by doing this:

Go into the Device Manager; click on IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers; right-click on the device listed (usually some sort of Microsoft DV device); select Update Driver Software, then select the option 'browse my computer for driver software,' followed by the option 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer;' and finally, select the driver named '1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)’ and make sure the 'show compatible hardware' checkbox is ticked.

You might also want to consider capturing HDV footage with HDV Split instead of Premiere's capturing interface.

  5. Thank you so much! Working now, now all I got to figure out why the hell did it record the sound so badly via XLR and I'm done :=)
