Why are programmers incompetent pieces of crap?

Once again I've been screwed over by crappy programming that has costed my hours of work. So if any programmers of this shotty software are out there reading this forum, I just want to take a minute to say, screw you!

Once again, hours down the drain, because things that should be simple, aren't, and it results in me relying on programs that do exactly what I tell them not to.

I had a perfectly good dvd rip that any software player I open it with plays it back, in widescreen format. Sony Vegas Pro 10, however, couldn't open it. Free software players can open it, but not the professional software, so a huge screw you to Sony for making "professional" software that can't even open a damn file, you guys should be out of work.

Then, anytime I try to convert it to another file format, vegas still wouldn't open it. Is there any file type you do like?

So, I had a nice converter that will take a video file you throw at it, and make a dvd. AVStoDVD. I'd like to ask the person who programmed that program, WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU MAKE A PROGRAM THAT MAKES DVDS TAKE A WIDESCREEN VIDEO, AND AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME I WANT FULLSCREEN AND ADD BARS TO MY VIDEO?

WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A PROGRAM DESTROY PERFECTLY GOOD VIDEO, INSTEAD OF JUST LEAVING IT ALONE, IN THE FORMAT IT IS ALREADY IN?

It's time like these I'm glad I don't actually work in video editing, with the way no one in the industry can make a damn program that's worth a damn, I'd go out of my mind having to work with this crap all the time.

This is Videohelp.com. Are you asking for help, or are you content just to rant?

I can't speak for Sony and Vegas but the creator of AvsToDVD and his program are highly thought of around here. You won't win many friends or any sympathy by attacking him and his program.

So, just what kind of video file is this that nothing wants to open it or, if it does, returns something other than what you wanted? Is it just a DVD decrypted to the hard drive? Or an MKV or MP4 with some other kind of video inside? Something you downloaded from somewhere, maybe? The MediaInfo text file of it and a sample might be helpful. And any problems with AvsToDVD should always be accompanied by the log file it created so your complaints can be confirmed.

I'm assuming you are referring to MPEG2 video taken from a DVD(exact copy minus copy protections) since that is the definition of the word "rip"?

Please post the details from the video source. Use mediainfo, view->text.

And explain exactly how it's fullscreen with bars. Like bars at top,right,left,bottom etc.


Or try other simple dvd converters like convertxtodvd($$), freemake video converter(adware!).

Guessing you are not a troll... you have 2 options with AVStoDVD:

1. Stop using it. No one forced you to use it. Free to use and free to leave.

or

2. Try to understand what's going on. As suggested by manono, post here the AVStoDVD project log file or, if you have already deleted the log, the mediainfo report of the source file(s).

Now that was a rant. Or two. I've had my moments there but ...

As mentioned above, try posting the contents of the input file. Were you talking about using your own decrypted disks as input? That's important, because if you're talking about web shared files, those things are more often than not wrongly encoded and no program is all that reliable.

In that respect, avstodvd is by far the best one I ever used. In fact I've used almost all the dvd encoders/authors for windows I could find and it was the best one. I've had problems with it because I don't like programs to install 3rd party codec packs, but the program itself always worked better than the others.

A common noob mistake ... assuming that paid software aimed at pros will "handle anything". The opposite is true. Pros understand standards and formats. They adhere to OS standards and format specifications, and the people who write the software know that a pro who didn't adhere to format standards is really a noob. Or an idiot.

If you don't like someone else's work, your only recourse to get the perfection you seek is to do the work yourself. In other words, you don't get to complain about a piece of software's programming unless you're a programmer yourself and can produce a better program. You could make a case that if you pay for something you get to complain if it doesn't do what you paid for. But, if you didn't read the box before buying, it's on you once again.

Anyway, I'm off to replace a drive axle and the struts on my car.

If you actually took a little time out of your seemingly sad existence and learnt how to use AVStoDVD to its potential then you might just have a dvd that meets your high standards.

But, since we know fook all about your video we can only make assumptions. So when your head comes down off the ceiling then do come back and post some details then you might just get some help.

Did you try import that DVD into Vegas directly?

File/Import / DVD camcorder disc - and browse for drive with your DVD, or find VIDEO_TS on your hardisk, Vegas will automatically rip all titles as mpg to Hardisk and load it on timeline. (If it is regular, authored DVD)

EDIT: I used word rip, but to avoid confusion, Vegas is not ripping DVD, just getting titles out onto hardisk, so if directly loading from DVD there must be some ripper present in the background I guess, but never tried it, better to use that ripper to get VIDEO_TS first, if DVD is not home video and such and it is protected.

Maybe the OP should use FormatFactory - it's also free.

I use it to create DVD format Mpgs with success - both 4x3 and 16x9 - but have to be careful to set the output.

^I've usually seen it written as PEBCAK. Problem exists between chair and keyboard.

There are much worse examples of bad programming in video editing/conversion than what the OP cited however. AVStoDVD is one of my favorite programs...really quite versatile in its niche.

If you want crappy programing look at Cyberlink, or the multitude of craptastic Chinese video programs.

If you want to get through this, tell us step by step, how you processed your file and posting a mediainfo text.
It sounds like somewhere down the line, a mistake was made on a setting(s) or perhaps using substandard program(s).

AVStoDVD always tries to correct video doesn't conform to the DVD spec. Because of this, AVStoDVD may convert video input flagged as 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 in some situations. Perhaps that is what happened to the OP

I participated in a thread last week where that was the case. The OP in the other thread had recorded the anamorphic output from his set-top box at half D1 (352x480 for NTSC or 352x576 for PAL) using his DVD recorder. He patched the aspect ratio for the recorded video from 4:3 to 16:9, but AVStoDVD re-encoded his original 16:9 half D1 video to letterboxed 4:3 half D1.

AVS toDVD could not author a DVD using the original video as is since the DVD standard doesn't allow 16:9 resolution except at full D1 (720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL). The other possible correction would have been for AVS2DVD to re-encode the video at full D1 16:9, but there may not have been enough space left on the DVD for that.

You know, it is really quite simple, which you would understand if you read the manual or checked on their website: most versions of Vegas that I have used are perfectly happy using ripped DVD material - AS LONG AS THEY ARE DEMUXED FIRST!

I just last spring redid my demo reel from older masters (some of which I only have a dvd copy of), and I am in the process of revising and beefing up yet again, and I can tell you from experience that Vegas WORKS (if you know what you are doing).

Maybe, but I think he knows a whole lot less than he thinks he does and my theory is that he downloaded a 2.35:1 MKV or XviD AVI from somewhere and is pissed that black bars were added above and below to make a 16:9 DVD of it. Since he hasn't returned to provide either a sample or an AvsToDVD log, there's no way to know for sure.

In addition, if his 'DVD rip' is the same XviD AVI from the other thread, that would explain why Vegas doesn't open it. Have you seen his other thread? It enlightening.

I did as suggested and read the OP's other recent threads. Maybe he has never heard the old saying "If you make something completely fool-proof, only fools will want to use it."

AVStoDVD is as close to fool-proof as I'd want to get. I don't use any software in the Vegas product line because I don't need the power of a full-featured NLE, so I can't comment other than to say if their products really were badly designed they wouldn't be recommended here so often.

All has to be in containers, not elementary streams, just to clarify it a bit more in case somebody tries that. No AC3 or m2v for example, Vegas will refuse to load those. If there are such files running it through TsMuxer to get Ts container helps.

I could be wrong (going from memory right now as I am on the road). Maybe it was that they needed to be remuxed. Will check back when I get home. Regardless, I had no trouble loading scores of clips.

I have never heard of a Shark Turbo Steamer/Sweeper/Mopper/Vacuum all-in-one or a "magic" one-handed egg flippers and neither has Google. However Shark's steam mops are fine for cleaning some floors. My mother and sister love theirs. I've tried one and it did work. I would definitely take a look at a Shark vac if I needed a new one. Hoovers are absolute crap these days according to the vacuum repair place my mother uses.
