TMPGenc VMW5 uses the same x264 encoder that most of the h264 encoders in our tools section use. The encoder that comes with Vegas is what turned me off to the Sony product. But, then, VMW5 is basically just an encoder and very basic editor; you wouldn't use it for something like fancy composites you get with Vegas, but that's not what VMW5 was designed for.
And I'll bet TMPGenc won't open that oddball file either. Try some of the Avisynth plugins. You might have to read a few instructions, but what's that to a power user like yourself?
