  1. hey i am capturing a file in avi format basically using the first method on the capturing bar from the right hand side of the screen (a little more configuration on my part)...anyways i plan to capure movies from tv but the uncomprsssed avi file is HUGE!!! i expected this and tried mpeg capture with other progs but it is too problematic and unencodable in tmpegenc. anyways MY QUESTION IS: how can i get the captured avi file in virtualdub to use a better format of compression than huffyuv. I would really like the VFAPI codec since it can do a whole movie in like 20 megs as compared to the 48 gigs uncompressed wud give me. i know it is not good quality but i do not plan to use the avi at all simply to encode to SVCD. i really need this!
    THANX

  3. I use CAMepRT to capture AVI directly to MPEG files. I believe that this program was written for Digital Camera capture, so I am not sure whether it will capture in the same way using a capture card. I have tried so many different methods that didn't work for me, but finally, this did. I also was capturing very LARGE AVI files previously. I also have found a program (I mention it in another post) called DVD Complete by Dazzle Multimedia that is the greatest. It does everything except SVCDs. You can also import and export vcd titles with it, but I have not tried this feature yet, as I am only interested in DVD. DVD Complete uses the ligos codec, and the results were much better than anything i have previously used. I think I have looked at EVERYTHING i can find a demo on, including the shareware stuff, and nothing was acceptable until now. Also I do not know if you have tried CAMpegRT yet, but let me know if you have, and what your reaction to it was.

  5. I think you want to capture in avi format then to recode to SVCD(mpeg2) format, and also you want avi file is as much as small. Ok first, do www.divx.com download divx 5.0 pro gain version or buy it for not to have any adds. Use that codec, play with its sets based on your test than use tmpgec or best way use DVD2SVCD (it supports directly from avi to svcd ok!!

  6. "play with its sets based on your test" ??
what do you mean by that? i captured a divx avi file (720 * 240 2500kbps) to the computer using virtualdub. the capture is not too god but i will ask again when i set up everything for good capturing. however the avi file cannot be opened in tmpegenc. how can i make it so it can be cuz withut that i cant encode to svcd. i simply made the avi file and tried to encode it.

    Killer22,

I'm not sure what kind of system you have and what capture card,... so I'm not sure this suggestion will be of any help. Anyway, I have an ATI all in Wonder Radeon card and I capture video from TV programs using MMC 7.5, in MPEG-2 mode, using "I" frames only, at 15 mbs, with 100 motion detection. This give me a very small file and the output can be read by TMPGen and coverted to VCD or SVCD format. I believe that is has just as good of quality as AVI format but much smaller filesize.

    Hope this helps

You've never mentioned what kind of system you have and the performance or what kind of card.. How could anyone know what you can do.

Give us some information about your system, then maybe we can tell what you can or can't do.

  11. i really dont think anything except for a good codec is at hand in my question but here goes:
    -Pentium 4 (1400 MHz 400)
    -D850GB intel mboard w/ 400 system bus
    -256 mb PC 800 RDRAM
-Windows xP PRo corporate w/ NTFS partition
-Ati all in wonder 128 pro (32 mb) on agp 4x
-30 gb 7200 RPM ultra ata 100 hdd set on DMA
    -i built it
    -everything is fine
-i dont think u need to know about my optical drivess and netwrok

this can do most anything, so i say once more i really think everything is fine with the hardware.
